While it's true that the confederate flag didn't fly over plantations where slaves were held against their will, it's hard to understand folks who see it as heritage rather than hate. Hard to understand because most of these folks speak as if they've got ten pounds of grits in a five pound mouth.
But, I digress. Sure the Civil War was a about state's rights. The southern states thought they had a "right" to own human beings as pets. It Turned out they were wrong about that.
The first legal documented court case of a slave and his owner in the young United states was the case of a freed black slave who claimed ownership of another black man who claimed indentured servitude, not slavery. He lost. The court awarded the black man to the freed black slave. This took place in the north. At least the south still believes in states rights. We do not believe that the federal government has the right to force their laws on the states and we resist them at every turn. We are not slaves to Washington.

Indentured servants then?

BTW, what was the point to your story about the slaves? I don't think you had one.

Louis had the most famous recording of Sleepytime Down South, and it's a great one too. But I somehow have a special warm feeling about Jack Teagarden's version.

10%(maybe)of southerners live off the land. And, really, they don't actually "live off the land". They raise cattle or grow soybeans, milo, wheat, etc. to sell. They buy their groceries at Walmart just like everyone else.
You want to see SWAT teams and police helicopters, come to Oklahoma, the 10th most dangerous state in the country. New York doesn't come close.

While I don't disagree with the ranking ,understanding those no's is a HUGE PART OF THE PROCESS. the FBI says that. also for some reason western states are getting left out of this whole thread.

while I agree 60 people killed in Tulsa is a nightmare campare that or the whole state Flint Mich. Or baltimore or Oakland would make a person feel safer. Rick

Yes there were indentured servants in the USA and elsewhere at that time and the point was that the south did not invent slavery in the USA nor was it only southern white folk that owned others folks.

They're just the only ones to go to war over keeping it. That's pretty big. Not quite the loophole you were going for.

lol I'm sorry if it bothered you. I wrestled with that one all day. Finally, I thought, WTH. I was kind of trying to get a raise out of HH, Oki, the other princess or Hippichick.
I talk with a drawl sometimes. lol (Odd, as I was raised in a little college town in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.)
My best friend on Guam for about 10 years was a black guy. We spent a lot of time together drinking beer and fishing. He would tell people he was from New Guinea. Some of his other friends would tell me his military dad was from South Carolina, he did talk a little "South". When I moved to the States in '91, people would ask me why I talked with a Southern accent when I'd had a few beers. I didn't know I did! I still revert back sometimes, so I'm no one to knock it. Some of my good friends here are from Texas too, so I still get the influence- and tendency.
Let me try to make amends. One generalization I've found that can be made about Southerners is that they are usually very honest and straight shooters. I admire that.
Do you have any fair generalizations? >High morals? >Help you if you need it?
