It's weird. A lot of Americans demand people speak English when in our country. When I traveled overseas with other Americans, they couldn't understand why only a few people spoke English!
These cocky bastards had in their head, "Everyone will be speaking English some day!"
Well not today!

Whenever my company sent me to another country for over a week I would take the time to learn a few words or phrases to get by during the day.
1. Hello
2. Where is the restroom?
3. Please
4. Thank you
5. Yes
6. No.
7. Goodbye
You can open a lot of doors with just these words in any country!

It ended up at the end of the week:
1. Hello
2. One more Martini Please!
3. God! You are beautiful!
4. Where the Hell is my hotel?

I can relate to that.
Hand gestures seemed to help a bunch also, I think they're a universal language?
I use'm as much as words in other countries.

Hey Hoosier!
Funny you mentioned this.
I have forgotten hand gestures completely!

In Brasil when the Brasilians watch an American movie at the cinema, they go crazy!
An American actor will give to "Okay" sign with his hand and say, "That's Cool!"
In Portuguese, the "Okay" hand signal means "Take it up the arse!"
"Cool" sounds like "Cu!" = "Arsehole".

NO! not those kind of hand signals.
thumbs up
victory
point
roll hands toward you - saying come on tell me more
there's always the middle finger
palm facing person-stop
undecided- hand vertical- palm out palm in -back and forth
:: and put the facial expression with it (also universal) and everybody
understands you with out saying a word.
Then there's acting like your taking a drink and shaking your head from side to side - also universal!!!

For finding a bathroom just grab your crotch and make a face-also universal. LOL
I found Mexicans especially think that's funny but understand perfectly what your asking.

Where the Hell is Tree City? I normally took Route 30 into Fort Wayne, I-70 into Indianapolis, I-90 into Elkhart, or I-64 into Evansville (The home of the greatest Buckeye, Bobby Knight!)......Sorry about that one.

For an immigrant to learn English has to be very difficult.

English has no rules! The language is part Germanic, Celtic, Latin, and other influences.

Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese follow certain rules. They only have a few irregular verbs. Most people in Western Europe can communicate: Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy.
In Central Europe it is the same: Czech Republik, Slovakia, Poland, Russia.
Now let's talk about certain accents!

English and French are the 2 'toughest' languages to learn - they're both all
'screwed up' with rules and regulations LOL same as the countries.

I went to Princeton, Indiana just above Evansville. There was a little wood paneled bar near the tracks that was a tribute to Bobby Knight. They had some things hanging on the wall also. "I'd rather IU than BALL U!" Cute!

My grandpa was born February, 17th. He would of been 113 years old. My wife's grandmother passed away at almost 105 years old. Very much the same birthday.
My liver is older than the grandparents!
