What truly motivates people to celebrate Christmas anymore?

Greed? What they expect to receive.

Generosity? What they expect to give.

Religion? It's a worship thing.

Something else.

Interesting thread..

I think Christmas has become so commercial,
It isn't the question of 'celebrating' it anymore,
It just happens all round us, like a runaway horse that broke
loose at a big race, galloping madly, knocking down anyone who might
stand in it's way...

All the TV & Radio jarring ads shouting at you to buy this n'that..
going into any store close to Christmas... even
to buy one item, like a newspaper..... becomes a marathon!
with queues of stressed frustrated people ahead of you..etc.. etc..

Happy Christmas from SCROOGE! Lol...

It's not really for me anymore,
Tho' I remember beautiful Christmas times of long ago,
walking down a crisp icy country road, to Mass,
all the stars out polished and gleaming in a dark
christmas morning frosty sky,
A depth of love and gratitude in my young heart because
Santa brought me the smallest gift..

Times past... Different times-

'Then, grace, don't be selfish...
stand back and let the young ones of 2013 have their Christmases,
As you had yours long ago'

If everyone concentrated more on the real meaning of Christmas this country and world would be something it's not. Like Christ, since we were made in his image, if we only acted as much as we look like him, God would still have mercy upon "US".

at this stage of my life, its more about habit or tradition - I put the tree up now only because of my granddaughters, they need to experience and enjoy the holiday. and of course just like I did with my own kids, we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
but I gotta admit, its not really in me anymore. lately I feel lost. im not sure exactly what it is I believe in or for that matter if there really is something TO believe in..

I hate feeling this way too.

Are you saying that everyone should believe that a cosmic Jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree?

At the same time I don't think it's healthy to
run down what others choose to believe and crush them
under foot like that...

A modicum of respect is always wise to keep,

we are all different and allowances should be made
for that..

Christmas was invented by Christians to lure Pagans to Christianity.
They tried to make it a world wide religion .... yeah ... that many years ago and they still push.
December has nothing to do with the birth of Christ.

And also,

'Christmas parties'

'killing turkeys'

'over indulging
for greedy kids'

'abusing alcohol'

etc..

these things have nothing to do with
the birth of Christ either!!!

A thought provoking topic, Grace. What you've stated is pretty much how I've felt the past few years. Like anyone, I've always loved Christmas, although I got more out of it when I was a child. Christmas seemed to have more meaning for me in those days. I feel so compelled to continue putting up Christmas lights outside each year. That will wain as I get older I'm sure, lol. Anyway, I think it's also because I'm surrounded by neighbors who feel just as compelled to put up lights. I do complain a bit when this time rolls around every year. Putting up lights, decorating, baking, etc., is hectic, but after it's all done, it seems so worth it. Besides, Christmas only comes once a year and it's the perfect time to gather my thoughts and appreciate my life and what I have. It's the reason for the season! At this time of year, my thoughts always go back to when I was a child. I was on the children's choir at our church - a beautiful old Gothic church. I remember all of the people I came to know and love there. I often felt that God was right there with me. Maybe that sounds silly, but I can't explain it any other way. I wish I could capture that feeling again. It's all about believing deep in your heart and soul. We're all here because something or someone made it all possible. I don't want to go as far as to say that God, or a God is protecting my every step. That to me would seem an injustice to all of the unfortunate people in this world who deserve just as much and probably more. I don't have any explanations for what happens in this world or why; only that I'm completely grateful for having lived this life so far, and to whomever made it possible; besides my mother that is, lol. Whether one believes in God or a God or not, Christmas still has a message - Love one another, be kind, find peace within yourself and others and help one another when needed. Your post is going to remind me of everything I need to be grateful for this year and I hope it does the same for everyone else.

Ooh yeah, CC. That sounds yummy. I've gotta try that! I bought a small box of gluten-free chocolate mint cookies a few weeks ago. They were delicious but expensive. The hot chocolate and candy cane sounds even better.
