From Think Progress: On February 26, 2012, a 17-year-old African-American named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. The shooter was George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old white man. Zimmerman admits killing Martin, but claims he was acting in self-defense. Three weeks after Martin’s death, no arrests have been made and Zimmerman remains free.
Here is what everyone should know about the case:
1. Zimmerman called the police to report Martin’s “suspicious” behavior, which he described as “just walking around looking about.”
Zimmerman was in his car when he saw Martin walking on the street. He called the police and said:“There’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about… These a**holes always get away”[Orlando Sentinel]
2. Zimmerman pursued Martin against the explicit instructions of the police dispatcher:
Dispatcher:“Are you following him?”
Zimmerman:“Yeah”
Dispatcher:“OK, we don’t need you to do that.”
[Orlando Sentinel]
3. Prior to the release of the 911 tapes, Zimmerman’s father released a statement claiming ”[a]t no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin.”[Sun Sentinel]
4. Zimmerman was carrying a a 9 millimeter handgun. Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea.[ABC News]
5. Martin weighed 140 pounds. Zimmerman weighs 250 pounds.[Orlando Sentinel; WDBO]
6. Martin’s English teacher described him as “as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.”[Orlando Sentinel]
7. Martin had no criminal record.[New York Times]
8. Zimmerman “was charged in July 2005 with resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer. The charges appear to have been dropped.”[Huffington Post]
9. Zimmerman called the police 46 times since Jan. 1, 2011.[Miami Herald]
10. According to neighbors, Zimmerman was “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.”[Miami Herald]
11. Zimmerman “had been the subject of complaints by neighbors in his gated community for aggressive tactics”[Huffington Post]
12. A police officer “corrected” a key witness.“The officer told the witness, a long-time teacher, it was Zimmerman who cried for help, said the witness. ABC News has spoken to the teacher and she confirmed that the officer corrected her when she said she heard the teenager shout for help.”[ABC News]
13. Three witnesses say they heard a boy cry for help before a shot was fired.“Three witnesses contacted by The Miami Herald say they saw or heard the moments before and after the Miami Gardens teenager’s killing. All three said they heard the last howl for help from a despondent boy.”[Miami Herald]
14. The officer in charge of the crime scene also received criticism in 2010 when he initially failed to arrest a lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a homeless black man.[New York Times]
15. The police did not test Zimmerman for drugs or alcohol. A law enforcement expert told ABC that Zimmerman sounds intoxicated on the 911 tapes. Drug and alcohol testing is “standard procedure in most homicide investigations.”[ABC News]
The Martin case had been turned over to the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office. Martin’s family has asked for the FBI to investigate.
Your whole post should be called think bullsh1t..... Most of it is speculation and conjecture. You also neglect to observe a few facts about Martin. He was KNOWN to have been suspended from school for drug abuse. THATS why he was visiting his father. He was ALSO found in possession of STOLEN womens' jewelry in his school backpack during a prelim investigation of burlaries in his hometown. He practiced and participated in MMA fights. If you're going to tell a story, get BOTH sides in on it. Your credibility is shot to sh1t.

Yeah..walking home with Skittles and ice tea is a real crime... a REALLY bad decision. Zimmerman having a weapon and NOT being a member of an organized Neighborhood Watch was a mistake. Having a 9mm was a mistake...and yes..Zimmerman made and has made in the past racial remarks. Police records show Zimmerman had called 911 a total of 46 times.

Yes, but who made the bad decision? Was it the unarmed kid who might or might not have turned to defend himself against an armed mall cop wannabe, or the armed mall cop wannabe who apparently couldn't finish a totally avoidable confrontation that his excess vigilantism created, without reaching for his firearm?

The Castle Doctrine laws that have been passed by 10+ predominantly Southern States are a piece of shite. They leave it up to Joe Six-Pack to decide during a heated confrontation, whether he believed he was in imminent danger. If he believed he was, he can defend himself with a firearm against an unarmed minor.

Get used to trials eerily similar to this one in the Castle Doctrine States. You pass laws that leave life or death, in holster or shoot decision-making to some previously confirmed violent Bianchi-wearing, law enforcement program-aspiring half wit, you're begging for dead civilians. You reap what you sow.

Something we can agree on. Only difference these days is that most of the bigotry and racism is coming from people of color.

Trayvon is not guiltless when he reached his destination and decided to go back. What was he playing? Billybadass?
If more people would get it through their thick skulls that people are carrying more guns today, we wouldn't have incidents like this.
Did Trayvon know he was a rent a cop, if so that's a poor decision to put his hands on him.
Did Trayvon have facial wounds too? If not, who attacked who?
It only took a gun to end it, sad.
I personally would NOT approach someone following me. If I have an option to get away, that's exactly what I'll do.
And like you say, you reap what you sow.

You label Zimmerman as a "wannabe mall cop" based on his past I guess?

Well then, wouldn't it then be fair to NOT label Travon as a "kid" but to also label him based on his "negative" past?

If not, you could be considered biased and your argument would be taken negatively.

Just something to think about.

He was found to have a baggie with TRACES of marijuana and a pipe. That is why he was suspended. He was also found to have TRACES of marijuana in his body...and?

The jewelry? Never charged...The "burglary tool" was a flat head screw driver.

"According to an October report of the incident by the Miami Dade Schools Police, obtained by the Miami Herald, Trayvon never received any punishment for the jewellery because he said it was not his and it belonged to a friend."

No action was taken.

Trayon's three suspensions from school were for skipping school and showing up late to class, graffiti and the baggie/pipe.

GEORGE ZIMMERMAN had been training in MMA in the weeks before Trayvon Martin shooting

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/6/28/4475994/...

Trayon did not practice or participate in MMA fights. A witness reported Trayon and Zimmerman were fighting MMA style.

Nice attempt at diversion..
