Really? We're talking about hair? What about all the poor little girls that moms are dressing like mini porn stars? I'm seeing 8 year olds with highlights if not roots showing from their last dye job, mini skirts, high heels, make-up, pierced ears. Why is this okay but a certain "hair cut" is a problem.

I don't like Mohawks either, but there's a lot of things out there I wouldn't choose for myself. It's hair people, not revealing clothing or something permanent like showing up with a neck tattoo or pierced body parts (and why it's okay to do something permanent like that to your little girl is beyond me). He's just a kid trying something out...and most kids do things to see what reaction they get. So great job, gave the kid the attention he wanted and a few reasons to rebel against authority.

Now a days, I would think it was ok. You see many folks sporting a mohawk. The parents could always lay it down and spike it up when he gets home.
As for the school, I hate to agree with them, but this is the time when kids learn to conform to the rules.
If I were the parents, I'd be looking in the hand book, I bet it's in there.
Super cute kid and a cool haircut.

I do want to say that I agree in the fact that if this doesn't conform to the school's handbook that they were in all regards right to send him home. My only problem is that sometimes those handbooks are fairly vague, and if so, maybe a phone call to the parents first would have been a better reaction.

I agree, you're right, why embarrass a little kid.

My son was sent home several times for the things he did to his hair. Surfer cut, dying it green, braiding, lol. That boy gave me grey hair.

why not just send him home with a note asking the parents to shave the rest of his head.
i dont agree with suspending kids, its time off from school. its a win win situation for the kid. lol
I know his mom, they did send him home & told her to change it and he could come back immediately. She refused to do it...so she needs to quit bit*hing and put him in another school district if its that important to her that he has a mohawk! I graduated from Shawnee in 2003 and its been the rule as long as I can remember. We can break the rules for one idiot parent or else you'd have to breal them for them all.

From the Shawnee student's handbook:

"Any markings or piercings which disrupt or are determined by the principal as having the potential to be disruptive or are deemed a safety issue, will not be allowed."

My guess this would include a Mohawk.

so the principal has a boner for Mohawks... great being in a place of power huh?
I believe those rule books are meant for harsher threats, like gang activty... but who am I to judge..

Springfield, Ohio...is that north or south of the Mason-Dixon line?

If it's south, that would explain a lot.

“Our policy clearly states that any dress or grooming which is disruptive or distracting to the educational process is not acceptable. In this particular case, the student’s hairstyle did provide disruption to the classroom,” Gregg Morris, the school district superintendent, told WHIO.

Actually your policy states "any markings or piercings," it does not specify haircuts.

What an asshat.

"Castle said that Ethan will return to Reid Elementary on Monday with a run-of-the-mill shaved head."

Then they'll suspend him for having no hair - which is clearly more disruptive now than the Mohawk would ever be.

Big difference Kimosabe.
That was not the issue, Tonto. "Principal" said a kid can be removed from class for any reason if he is a "distraction" (quotes mine). Try to concentrate.

My guess is that this would be a principal from the shallow end of the gene pool.
