I let my son used a cheap used car, about $2500. A couple of years later it started having engine trouble. The garage guy said $200 to fix the top of the engine, we said OK.(Push rods) Then he said found new problems need $200 more (a very good mechanic and honest so this is not about that.(rocker arms and bearings. We said OK. Later he found more problems up stairs in the engine, we approved another $200 for $600 total.found out it needs near a thousand dollars worth of work ...on the front end /c:
After a put together, started engine and he heard more noise, called me to come over and hear. We are out $600 so hate to lose that kind of money, so said go ahead and look for other problem. He found major problems and said a lot of money needed, or buy a junk yard engine. We hated the idea of a junk yard engine, as it may be only a few hundred miles from having a similar problem to the top engine problem we just paid for. Hate to have a high dollar fix as the car is not worth much more.
So told him just a quick low cost temporary fix while we save up for another cheap used car.(wife had a crash about 6 months later (with no insurance as it was a very old car).
