I went up in the "Arch" (The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot high monument)
~~~ I'm afraid of heights ~~~
The elevator was like going up stairs - go a few floors -then slide in and go a few more.
At the top when the door opened I saw all these people laying on large glass panes going out diagonal from the floor - See pic below
http://www.wunderground.com/data/wximagenew/m...
I finally got up the nerve to do it on the river side - barges on the river where
about 1/2 inch long from up there.
Not spending much time laying on my stomach looking out it seemed to be moving back and forth. Getting down I went to a tram ( not elevator ) assistant and inquired how far was the arch swaying back and forth and he said it wasn't @ that point I came down ASAP.
I too have been up in the arch. I wish I had told them I needed to walk the 92 (if I recall correctly) steps to the top. That elevator wasn't too small and nearly ruined the whole experience for me. The wind was blowing and that wasn't a comfortable feeling either.
PS, I started this discussion because Topix has refused to allow me to post link to the construction of that excellent scenic view. That began on February 12, 1963.
I would recommend anyone with an interest to check out great video that shows the construction of that arch.
Do you know this City is considered one of the most dangerous in US?
I hadn't realized I was smack dab in the middle of it, but then I wasn't afraid either. Naive? Perhaps, but we aren't meant to be scared of the unknown.
That wasn't an elevator and I didn't like it one bit. It's round and tiny and when it's filled with others that are uncomfortable .. it feels a bit contagious.
It is one of the places it's most appropriate to stay on your belly while looking out over that city. Haha
Really! It's been a long time since I've been there, before my mommy days. When we went we saw the Arch, zoo, and the caves. It was a short weekend trip! Down town a few blocks from the park where the arch is there's a bakery they made the best deli sandwich's. I can't remember the name of the bakery. I just know when we got to St. Louis we went straight to the arch. Only thing, it was 9 or 10 in the morning and the arch wasn't open yet. But we were hungry. So we walked down town just a few blocks from the arch and found the bakery. We asked the grounds men at the park about the gambling boat they warned us not to go because it was in the bad side of town.
It does have bad parts of town East St. Louis. But what big city doesn't have a bad side. Heck even small towns have a dangerous side. But I still think its awesome of course that's just my opinion. I love the arch scary up in it on a windy day. Elevator ride well its different. Going through the Budweiser place was interesting. Different museums it just depends what You are interested in.
25 Things To Do in St. Louis
http://explorestlouis.com/visit-explore/disco...
Arch Facts (to ease your mind) It won't fall over, just feels that way. Not the best attraction for people with bad vertigo or claustrophobia, but otherwise very cool place to visit.
http://www.gatewayarch.com/experience/arch-fa...
Carl's Deli......YUM!! I refuse to go to St. Louis and not go to Carl's Deli, don't care if it's out of the way from what we're seeing or not and in a safe area too.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/carls-delicatessen-re...
Good and bad like every big city, but if you stay in the touristy areas you'll be fine. The Zoo and Grant's Farm are really fun family places, great for kids of all ages. I see links have been provided :)
