On the new laptop I just bought, I installed the inSSIDer program and can identify over a dozen access points from where I live. People must finally be getting wise, as I currently only see two that are unsecured.

That's a pretty low percentage.

I imagine anyone living in an apartment complex is buried in AP's.

As to wireless, it is no less secure than wired, just a bit harder for the avereage Joe to intercept data. You have no idea if your data is passing through a router that has been compromised and 'leaks' all it's traffic to a thief.
