Agreed on the access/security points, Blue. But Utopia in U.S. left on the bus and skedaddled quite some time ago.

In the society we live in, there's been armed police assigned to some big-city schools for some time now. In California, one school system has had a 24/7 police force dedicated to that system for some time.

Around the country, police and sheriff departments by request and coordination with school systems are assigning officers on-site and/or increased patrols -- including elementary schools.

Permitting school administration and staff for carry without extensive background and mental checks to be deputized in very remote environments is not the way to go, IMO.

And then there are these boneheads:
1) while certainly performing a service to the school, he should have consequences. I'm in agreement with most comments, he's a lucky guy even to be charged with 3rd degree felony

2) in my state, the legislature will ponder this:

Some people are easy targets because they have no self defense.
I think some of you folks on here have never been in the position of having a gun held to your head, I have. Believe me, it will change your opinion on having a gun when you have violence staring you in the face. All he had to do was twitch his finger and my head would have been splattered on the wall.
I have seen many crimes and those of you who are locked away in a safe community will come to realize one day that your haven has been breached.
Good luck and my advice is to buy a gun.
I'll tell YOU that I'm not in a 'locked community' and I own a gun.

While the enclaves might call Stars and Bars "Ole Glory", Old Glory is the flag of the U.S.

Tally, I do agree. Stiffer penalties might cap some crimes but alas .... trying to pass such laws will not happen. You have all those bleeding hearts who picket when a known killer is put to death.
I have always stated that we should use some of these islands far from civilization to dump our violent prisoners. Give them the means to grow food and they live, die, or kill each other. It sure would lighten the load of over populated jails. It could be done and the only guards would be patrolling around the island in boats.

what I believe is that we have to have stricter qualifications , a 54 year old doesn't need a lets say high powered rifle , unless she produces a yearly hunting license then we should deny,,

things should make some sense ..

unless you belong to a shooting club [and use the range]
why do you need more than one weapon??? small stuff , but still stuff..

FOOTNOTE: The first official national flag of the Confederacy, called the Stars and Bars, was flown from March 4, 1861, to May 1, 1863. Inspired by Austria's national flag, it was designed by Prussian artist Nicola Marschall in Marion, Alabama.[1][2] The Stars and Bars flag was adopted March 4, 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama and raised over the dome of that first Confederate Capitol. Marschall also designed the Confederate Army uniform

Deer Whisperer, i can't agree that, just because it has been done, that stationing police around the schools is economically feasible.....especially longterm......too many school boards in this country, faced with shrinking tax bases, would be much better served on beefing up the entry points in the schools, along with a speaker system, allowing access after identification....perhap's in unison with a squawk speaker(loud enough to both scare away an intruder and notify the whole school) and alarm direct to local law enforcement....a onetime expense, coupled with periodic maintenance.....

How about we bring our Military home to protect US.. Even with an armed guard or two in the school systems,(which I think is a reasonable start) a madman is still going to take his chances, and his plan will start with taking out the opposition... he may think twice about taking on a military force.. even of 1... they are trained different,,,think different etc...

you have school district vote down new buses...taxes are way too high is the cry... do you realize the cost this would be...

Remember: we were going to convert to the metric system and the US Government realized how damn foolish that was
because it would have cost Billions just to change traffic signs ....

as sad a this is arming a school is not the answer , it is a school not a fortress...

But gosh!!! What would you do if 30 crack head thieves were to break into your house simultaneously? Or if all of the 10-year-olds in the neighbourhood decided to play "tag" and trespass on your property all at once running over your lawn? Do you think you could hit even 10 moving targets with only 15 or 20 rounds?

Yes, tax bases have diminished in very many places for various reasons.

Those security methods and practices and procedures are being done too ... uh, Blue; school administrations and the police are responding to their constituents, who will pay the freight until they decide otherwise.

No one but the truly weird are advocating complete elimination of self and home defense/protection.
But the assertion by the gunwing-nuts that's what is really going on makes for a 'rah-rah' rally point.
I'm familiar with how upset they got when we told them their rich people could no longer keep people as pets!

They still have a tendency to go to extremes and have a Crain-like affliction for interpreting words wrong. For example, if you say "gun control" they hear, "CONFISCATION!!!!!" Even when it's explained to them, they STILL hear "CONFISCATION!!!!!" It could be that years of firing assault weapons without hearing protection has really effed up their hearing. Or, they're just dumb.

The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting.
Stupid argument for gun control: When the founding fathers wrote the 2nd Amendment, they were talking about flintlock rifles.

Rebuttal: Among other things they were talking about was overthrowing an oppressive government. In that day the army had flintlock rifles and the navy used wind powered wooden ships. Now our government has predator drones, nuclear submarines, tanks, attack helicopters, stealth bombers and much more. The people need more than flintlock rifles to keep our government in check. When they wrote the first Amendment, they were talking about screw press block printing, but the first amendment still applies to television and the internet today. So if they want people to give up their modern weapons because the 2nd Amendment was not meant to cover them, then they need to give up all modern means of freedom of the press.

When I was in the Navy I had a M=16 and ammo. It was off the books. We would take it out when we would go on bomb drop evaluations. I could have took it with me but that would have been a federal crime so it just wasn't worth it.

Sorry, but we are speaking of rednecks here and they call the Confederate flag, ole glory, I call it a Confederate flag. You can get technical about it, but I hear the slang. I know the term is wrong, so are their racial attitudes. We have a lot of uneducated folks in the backwoods south. Something you yanks don't get, and never will.

I have 5 people in my home, 5 guns. Each person has a license and a gun and know how to shoot. I am a very average person living an average life. I see our neighbors homes robbed and I see ugliness. I also have a territorial dog, alarms, and stickers on my windows stating in English and Spanish, "If you enter this home uninvited, you will be killed". I have all the deterrents and the gun is the last resort.

Witness all the crying over 2nd Ammendment infringement had we banned shotguns, single shot rifes, handguns...and God help us, clay pidgeons.

Republicans would never go for it. They are *likethis* with money! Oy!

I'm sure a deal could be cut though. If they are allowed to give Social Security to their friends on Wall Street, and if the security contracts could be awarded to friends of certain Congressmen, then it would be okay.

However, without that criteria, it would look like Obama is furthering his Police State by taking over the schools. So, there's that.
