A Russian official angered over new sanctions that the United States imposed on Russia over the Ukraine crisis is suggesting that American astronauts get to the International Space Station by using trampolines instead of rockets.

"The United States introduced sanctions against our space industry... We warned them, we will reply to statements with statements, to actions with actions," Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who heads Russia's defense industry

Russia will reject a US request to use the International Space Station after 2020 in retaliation for trade sanctions imposed over Russia's annexation of Crimea, its deputy prime minister announced today.

The space station is maintained by both American and Russian crews. But because NASA's shuttle program was decommissioned in 2011, the only way to get there is on board Russian spacecraft. The US currently pays Russia $60 million per person to ferry its astronauts to the space station, and had planned to continue working on it until 2024.

UKRAINE President Petro Poroshenko last night said the signing of an association accord with the EU marked a “historic day’’ that offered his former Soviet country a fresh start after years of instability.

The accord, which will seal closer political and economic ties with the EU, offered “an absolutely new perspective for my country’’.

“It is a historic day, the most important day since independence’’ from Moscow in 1991, Mr Poroshenko said.
