Good morning on this still cold Wednesday. It’s 14 degrees and there’s nearly an inch of snow on the ground.
Today is the opening of Super Bowl Boulevard, formerly known as Broadway.
Through Sunday, 13 blocks of Broadway – from 47th to 34th Streets – will be closed to traffic and converted into a so-called fan zone.
Will this affect your commute?
Do you dare venture into Midtown?
It turns out that the onslaught of pedestrians, rather than the closed street, might cause the biggest problems.
Many drivers already avoid Broadway, parts of which have been blocked to cars since 2009, when pedestrian plazas opened at Times Square and Herald Square.
But many thousands of people are expected to descend on the fan zone.
As Seventh Avenue clogs, taxis and other savvy drivers may head over to Fifth and Ninth Avenues, creating delays.
Today will also offer the usual Wednesday afternoon matinee shows in the theater district, further complicating matters.
As for subways, everything should be fine, the transportation reporter for The Times, Matt Flegenheimer, told us.
But the Broadway Line (N, Q, R) and the Sixth Avenue Line (B, D, F, M) could get busier than usual.
“They all go to Herald Square, which is at the foot of the mayhem,” Mr. Flegenheimer said.
If you’re thinking of setting foot there yourself, here’s a guide.
Here’s what else you need to know for Wednesday.
WEATHER
A little snow fell early this morning (0.8 inches in Central Park) but the sun is out, bringing a high of 24.
That’s three whole degrees warmer than yesterday’s high of 21.
Good weather for walking around, blocking traffic.
Tomorrow we may even hit 30. Ahh…
COMMUTE

Do you have mixed feelings about the Super bowl being in your neighborhood this year? I understand not only the normal tourist but now you have the area modified and even more visitors to one condensed spot. I understand, when it was here a few years back it was a mad house. Not only that it's all the local media would talk about.

The way I see it it's like Christmas, we're so excited for the big day and do everything we can to get ready for it. But in the end a little part of us happy it's over.

Don't take me wrong I love the Super bowl! Can't wait!

Do you know if they're having a Zipline in the Super bowl village this year?

Idk about the zip line thing, but it's fine with the Super Bowl and all the extra tourists and stuff. It's just a madhouse in midtown, too many pedestrians and too much traffic.

As I reformed pickpocket, I will definitely be missing out on all the golden opportunities this event brings.

Wallets in front pockets people!

Anyway, I still am self-employed and my living is connected to the Super Bowl. Who wants to buy some really nice tickets to see the game? Cash deals only.

Super Bowl 2014 cocktails: The Sherminator

This flavor-packed Super Bowl cocktail matches the pro cornerback’s signature, er, intensity.

~ From the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa (available all week at Long Bar, Gypsy Bar and B Bar) 1 serving

¾ ounce crème de menthe (green)
¾ ounce crème de cacao (white)
¾ ounce vodka
¾ ounce cream or half and half

Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with … something that looks like dreadlocks.
