So what else do you get for your money in a motel - I recently watched a TV crime programme where there had been a murder in a motel room, forensics took sperm samples off the bed cover, they found a total of over 80 separate samples. wish I could sleep standing up.

All kidding aside, this happens more than you know old mattresses which are disposed of because of bedbugs, not because their worn-out and saggy or anything, places which do "mattress refurbishing" will take these and throw new upholstery (covers) on them, and sell them as new or as refurbished, to look at them you'd never know what was underneath that layer of new fabric. Some reputable bedding sales outfit our advertising that they use different trucks to pick up old mattresses, then they do for delivering the new ones. This is because the problem of bedbugs is so bad, cross-contamination of new product within the trucks was happening.

This is not uncommon. It is illegal, but some unscrupulous dealers will "recycle" mattresses by sewing on a new liner. So there may be bedbugs, urine, blood, vomit, fecal matter, etc. trapped inside. A lot of times, people don't even know. But then some get bitten by bugs or break out in a rash and wonder why.
That's not true. You can sell a used mattress in NY as long as it is sanitized and cleaned. Problem is that there are no rules as to what that means. Most of the places around here would either retick them or just use the spring frame and reupholster it. They also have to retag it .

Don't let your hands or feet hang over the edge of the mattress, there's something under the bed.
