So THAT'S why newer mattresses are so much thicker than older ones.

I just bought a new set last month and was astonished it was about 8 inches taller than the old set.

The good news here, for all you cynics, is that going by the headline the new mattress was not bedbug ridden.

This is not uncommon. It is illegal, but some unscrupulous dealers will "recycle" mattresses by sewing on a new liner. So there may be bedbugs, urine, blood, vomit, fecal matter, etc. trapped inside. A lot of times, people don't even know. But then some get bitten by bugs or break out in a rash and wonder why.

Some of the other news stories reachable from the story are interesting, like the woman suing for discrimination for being called a woman.

Californians buy about 4 million new mattresses and box springs a year. Of those, roughly 2 million are illegally dumped or sent to landfills. Fewer than 1 in 10 mattresses are recycled for use in other products, said Correa.
