<quoted text>The Bushmaster is banned based on the specific model's ability to make it fully automatic. It’s unclear if the specific model of semiautomatic rifle Lanza reportedly used would have been forbidden under the expired assault weapons ban. The Bushmaster .223 “wasn’t banned by name” in the 1994 assault weapons ban. I suspect that she owned a model that "snuck under the wire" of the law - or she had it modified after the purchase to go fully auto.
The Bushmaster MAY be manufactured with selective fire capability. The vast majority sold to the public are not. Most citizens do not have the special permit required to own full auto weapons.

How about some real statistics?

"Gun-related death rates in the United States are eight times higher than they are in countries that are economically and politically similar to it."

"In 2009, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 66.9% of all homicides in the United States were perpetrated using a firearm."

"In 2005, 75% of the 10,100 homicides committed using firearms in the United States were committed using handguns, compared to 4% with rifles, 5% with shotguns, and the rest with a type of firearm not specified."

Lastly, take a look at this chart if you will. Notice the UK and Canada's place on the list as compared to the United States.

Ok. How many of those deaths by guns were gangbangers killing each other? How many were mob related? How many were rival biker gangs at war with each other?

Now, how many were legal firearms used by law abiding citizens?

<quoted text>Just a very small technicality. Still, those weapons provided far more firepower than is rationally necessary for self defense and whether or not it legally falls just a little bit short of being an assault rifle is of no consolatiom to grieving family members. Is your argument so weak and convoluted that you have to resort to two bit (if even that) personal attacks? If there is one thing the NRA hates in its quest to put gun industry profits ahead of our safety, it is comparison statistics because they do not reveal what the NRA wants to hear. I am not in favor of a blanket ban on firearms, but nobody needs a high powered and/or assault weapon for legitimate home self defense.
You have NO clue.

<quoted text>Desperate, I see you are. If we simply compare accidents and murders to justifiable homicides from firearms kept in homes, they far outnumber justifiable self-defense killings, even if you don't include suicides and all too many of those suicides are murder-suicides.
So you would rather people that pull their gun in self defense shoot the perp, even if the perp turns and runs? Do you have figures on how many attacks are thwarted by armed citizens without having to fire a shot?
Well, that means it never happens then, right?

Yeah- just because there's no proof doesn't mean it doesn't happen every day. Besides, anecdotal <cough> *evidence* trumps facts.

Don't worry, that's the plan anyway. Dems chisel away a little at a time.

The only thing I have heard from gun advocates so far, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that there are only two reasons we keep assault rifles, large capacity clips and automatic weapons legal:

1. It's our 2nd Amendment right to collect them
2. They're fun to shoot.

Yeap.
Ok, I'll correct you. You're wrong.

There is one reason. Because the second amendment gives us the right to possess them to prevent tyranny from a government that also possesses them, and more.

Not all semi-automatic weapons are labeled assault weapons politically. In fact, most are not. You clearly know very little about firearms. Come on, try to tell me a Remington 742 is an assault weapon.
