Abuse of official capacity is a first-degree felony with potential punishments of five to 99 years in prison.

Coercion of a public servant is a third-degree felony that carries a punishment of two to 10 years.

In office since 2000 and already the longest-serving governor in Texas history, Perry isn't seeking re-election in November.

Mr. Perry will be arraigned at a later date at the county criminal courthouse a few blocks from the governor’s mansion.

Mr. McCrum said it was a matter of procedure that anyone charged with a felony “will have to be booked in,” including the governor. Asked if Mr. Perry would have to have a mug shot taken and be fingerprinted, he added,“I imagine that’s included in that.”

According to the state comptroller’s website, the governor’s office has paid his lawyer, Mr. Botsford, nearly $80,000 since June. Legal experts said that other state officials who have been accused of crimes relating to their duties have had to pay for their own defense, and this was one of the first times Texas taxpayers were paying the bill.

Rick Perry does not deserve this. Somebody just wants him to stop trying to secure the border.
Just another democratic plot to draw attention off the real issues.
The democratic political party will do all in it's power to prevent any republican from becoming president in 2016 just like they've done the last two elections - by hook or crook!
And Perry seems to be becoming a standout to run. The republican platform might go with him to keep Texas republican.

Ms. Lehmberg is Austin’s top prosecutor and plays a powerful role in Austin in overseeing the Public Integrity Unit. At the time of Mr. Perry’s veto last year, prosecutors in the unit had been investigating a state agency called the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The agency — one of Mr. Perry’s signature initiatives — came under scrutiny by state lawmakers after accusations of mismanagement and corruption; a former official there was indicted last year for his handling of an $11 million grant.

Mr. Perry’s critics accused him of using Ms. Lehmberg’s arrest to try to dismantle the public corruption squad, to thwart the investigation into the cancer-research agency and to seize an opportunity to take down a prominent Democrat.

I read the article. I'm gonna let the system handle it, because it's the only choice I have. I just gave my opinion on the situation. At this time, that is still allowed in this country. I'm well aware that he can't win against Hillary 'what difference does it make?' Clinton. That is why I don't want him for the GOP nomination. But, IMNSVHO, he would make a very good POTUS.

A Travis County grand jury on Friday indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two felony counts, alleging he abused his power by threatening to veto funding for the state's Public Integrity Unit unless Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, who had pleaded guilty to drunk driving, stepped down.

It appears to those on the prosecutor’s side that his funding veto and the threat that preceded it were an attempt to intimidate and coerce the office that has the job of policing corruption and ethics cases in state government.

They contend the governor’s appointees at the Cancer Prevention Research Institution of Texas were under investigation and that Perry’s veto might have hobbled that operation.

As the Texas Observer explains, this indictment arises out of a dispute over who will hold one of the few Texas offices with statewide power that is still controlled by a Democrat. Rosemary Lehmberg is that Democrat, and she is the District Attorney for Travis County, Texas. Because Travis County includes Austin, the state capital, her office controls a Public Integrity Unit that investigates alleged ethical breaches by state-level politicians. Among other things, that unit investigated the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which is accused of improperly distributing grant money — including some grant money that was given to people with close ties to Governor Perry.

In April of 2013, however, Lehmberg was arrested for driving while very, very intoxicated. Hours after her arrest, her blood alcohol level was three times above Texas’ legal limit. She eventually pleaded guilty and spent a few weeks in jail. Yet Lehmberg has refused to step down from her role as District Attorney. According to the Observer, this is because she does not want Perry to have the opportunity to replace her with a Republican.

Perry allegedly crossed the line from an eager partisan hoping to replace a powerful official to a governor who broke the law, however, when he threatened to veto funding for the Public Integrity Unit unless Lehmberg resigned — and then he followed through on this threat.

I think the above post was a pretty clear and unbiased account of why he got indicted. It even mentions that the county attorney investigating him pleaded guilty to a DUI.

I doubt Perry will be convicted of any felonies, but almost anybody could see a problem with him taking out the county attorney that's investigating him?

So Perry gets indicted for doing what Obama says he'll do to any Republican legislation? Too funny.

Yeah but he told the county attorney he was going to cut off her funding if she didn't resign. If fairness, she had pleaded guilty to a dui but so did Bush and Cheney

I was thinking the same thing...when will Obama be indicted for his "pen & phone" comments?!? Abuse of official capacity on Obama's part?!? Absolutely!!!
