Trick-or-treating—going from house to house in search of candy and other goodies—has been a popular Halloween tradition in the United States and other countries for an estimated 100 years. But the origins of this community-based ritual, which costumed children typically savor while their cavity-conscious parents grudgingly tag along, remain hazy.

My parents didn't think much about cavities when I went door to door for candy. Heck, they didn't even tag along. That was a long time ago and trick or treating was pretty safe in those days. I've had a few cavities to show for my candy eating days, although I really wasn't much for candy when I was a kid. Many parents didn't hound their kids about dental hygiene. It was the usual "Don't forget to brush your teeth", but they never really followed up like today's parents do. It was only when I started to think about boys that I took particular attention to my smile, lol. I remember my dad would raid my treasure of treats that took hours and even days to collect. An entire week of trick or treating was fun but quite exhausting. My dad would pick out all the Reese's, Almond Joys and Hershey bars. What was left, I ended up throwing away. Yeah, my dad had a real sweet tooth, which is why he probably had dentures, lol. I remember collecting quite a bit of change on my foray, including rotting fruit, lol. Today, parents are obviously concerned about their kids teeth. Appearances are more important then ever. Gotta keep up those pearly whites and you only get one set that should last you a lifetime. Even if they don't, dentistry has come a long way. I think it's great to teach your kids about dental hygiene and what can happen if you don't take care of your teeth. I suppose all that candy is bad for the teeth and candy can be addicting for many kids, but one night of some indulgence and a good tooth brushing before bed should be ok. There are enough stresses for kids these days and you're only a kid once.

Hi Lifelover! Halloween wasn't meant to be the "devils holiday". Over the decades though, people made it what it is today. Halloween can be a lot of fun if you don't take it seriously. I do like some of the horror movies like vampires, werewolves and witches and I've been watching those for as long as I can remember, but I personally detest slasher movies and bloody props that are so characteristic and symbolic of Halloween today. Of course, there is some violence even in the type of movies I like to watch, but these are pretend characters and not real like serial killers or psycho killers. Some will say, violence is violence no matter what the storyline or character though. It's a personal choice and when children are in the home, then it's important to control what they view.

We are all young at heart.... When my 2 sons were small... I let them eat their candy til their hearts content.. When they were tired of it all.. I froze what I wanted..Threw the rest away.. Could be weeks or months.. Just like my mom and step father.. We went threw all their candy as soon as they got home.. Torn packages on candy the apples, and pop corn balls all thrown away.. Soo since we now have an empty nest.. The FUN of Halloween kinda ended.. When the children come to the home now,,to receive a treat.. I am dressed like an Evil witch,,[Complete with Green Face...] and throw Lots and Lots and Lots of candy in their bags..[That way,,I dont get stuck eating it... To this day,, WE cant have any Pumpkins outside.. Unfortunately,,,They get smashed.. Thats the way it is..

He lasted an hour with some sprinkles of rain, which was nice, because it's a little warm out....he fell down some stairs and he found a few houses with the candy bowls on the porch and he thinks that means, take all....only a few please...There was a man with a cooler of beer on wheels walking around with his children...now if that's not classic I don't know what is...the police was riding around too...very nice evening. Great story, thank you.
