For years my family and I would have Thanksgiving dinner at my mother's. She enjoyed slaving away in the kitchen and refused any help from anyone. She put out quite a spread. Now that she's too old and can't do it anymore, I've been doing it for the last 6 years. I've just learned that I can't do gluten anymore. That is, I can't have anything with wheat or wheat gluten in it. I've been gluten-free for about a week now and boy can I tell the difference. No more achy joints and the itchy patch that was on my skin completely disappeared including abdominal discomfort and distention. It's not really hard to go gluten-free as I thought it would be and I'm so glad that I did.

I'll be preparing the usual this year - organic turkey breast and turkey legs, candied sweet potatoes prepared with brown sugar, 100% organic maple syrup, and some almond oil. I simmer those in a skillet until they get a little crispy on the ends. Potato filling, homemade cranberry sauce. Hopefully I can find organic cranberries, although last year I couldn't find any organic. Corn, green beans for the veggies. Homemade pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

We eat Thanksgiving at the Grans house which means turkey, ham, white potatoes, yams, corn, green beans, stuffing w/mushrooms, stuffing w/o mushrooms, left over lasagna or ziti from a previous meal, but it's still good, home made cole slaw, baked beans, home made biscuits, home made lemon poppy seed bread, cranberry sauce, a cheese & cracker tray & veggie tray. Also, apple, pumpkin, lemon merangue & chocolate cream pies and usually chocolate cake.
I hope Grans house has a wide exit door.

I swore I was going to down size the meal this yr & I've already bought a whole turkey instead of a breast like I had planned...instead of cornbread dressing (which I LOVE) I decided to make a small pan of stuffing (yall are killin me talkin bout it but I shall wait til Christmas...I can do it...I made big pan of cornbread dressing back in Oct)OK maybe sweet peas for him & my sis...blech!!! brussel sprouts (my idea)...mashed potatoes (his request) & turkey gravy...jellied cranberry sauce, rolls...1 pecan pie & 1 peach pie/ice cream...I'm fighting panic attack at the thought of no sweet tater pie or casserole & idk how the stuffing (which I wont stuff) will turn out but who cares?

Clem: you really crack me up!!!

So has everyone completed their grocery shopping? I'm all done except for cranberry sauce & brown & serve roll...maybe dried cherries for the stuffing...which is going to be an experiment for me... starting with pepperidge farm cornbread stuffing mix...was considering toasted pecans, sautéed onions & mushrooms, crumbled bacon OR sausage, chopped apple... what y'all think?

Storytime:
When I was growing up on the farm we'd kill as many as 12 hogs at a time. All the neighbors would come in to help us and we'd share with'm. This was a big 2 day event for several years.1950 to 1962 if I remember correctly.
There was 10 of 'us'+ other kin and volunteers made up the rest.
There was a 'Huckster' came by once a week with a 'big black guy' running it ( great guy!), we'd tell him we were killing hogs and he'd tell his kin folks and they'd come get the guts. They'd take all the scraps we'd throw off and the guts
home to make their 'stuff'. They'd clean the intestines, turn'm wrong side out and boil'm and fill'm full of ground liver, heart, brains, and trimings to make =franks=?? may sound gross but it was better than anything you can buy at the grocery store today. We'd even give'm a couple cakes of -cracklins to mix in-.
Did I enjoy eating with them, you damn bet'ya I did,
and they were good people (neighbors).
Olie, the huckster driver would always give me 'goodies' when Mom Ma got groceries.

I just hated whenever it was butchering time...beef or pork...I couldn't even watch Mama process the poultry or clean fish...yes I was a tomboy put that was just GROSS... I worked my tail off n the garden ...I never helped with the haying either but did drive the tractor while Daddy stood on trailer throwing hay off for the cattle...I learned me some cuss words during this time lol
