come on everybody! Lighten up it's Arkansas!
My guess is you've never even been to Arkansas, and probably don't have a clue where it is on the map. How convenient that your home state isn't named. I'd rather be from Arkansas than ignorant like you.

In rural towns, the high schools still teach subjects and curriculum that is of cultural interest to the kids in the community. In an area where hunting game is prevalent (like Huntsville AR) it's not uncommon for these types of classes (like how to properly prepare game) to be offered, and for them to be VERY popular! When I was in middle school in Arkansas, everyone was required to take a semester of Home Ec and a semester of "Industrial Arts" which included the state's Hunter Safety course. So, it's NOT strange for this curriculum to be available to this community! Now, I'm sure the teacher didn't have a rifle handy at school to kill the live animal, so a nail gun was the most humane, effective way to do it. I wouldn't have wanted to be there or to watch it, but it's not some crazy, unheard-of thing in a high school in rural America!
The art of making Raccoon Stew? Sounds mighty tasty.
But, I think I'll stick to chickin 'n dumplins.

I'm sorry, but you're comparing apples to oranges here! Yes, animals are killed every day by motor vehicles...but those are NOT intentional killings. I have never seen anyone aim for and run down a raccoon or any other wild animal on the road. This was the intentional killing of a trapped animal.
In my opinion, what he should have done was had the parent who brought in the live animal (when he promised a dead one) take it back and postponed that particular lesson until a proper demonstration subject could be obtained. One that was killed humanely. Even if these kids need to learn hunting and skinning skills, they still should learn a proper respect for the animal first.
I agree. The lesson should have been postponed and the live raccoon should have been released. This was very poor judgment on the teacher's part. I hope he's fired.

No wonder we have to take so many supplements in this country, the majority of people in this country still don't know that the veggies in the garden are a healthier bet. There is no way that the animal's death was justifiable or freaking hilarious for that matter and charges should be brought up on the teacher and the school! Scott from AOL needs a reality check on what he finds funny and better education on animals, rather than just the basics!

Yes racoons are big rabies carriers because there are too many due to the LIB cry baby tree-huggers.

I am from Arkansas, now in North Central Florida, and I must say that there is more class in Arkansas than here. People think Arkansas is backwoods, but there is NO PLACE worse than North Florida! There is a difference between country and redneck...

You people act talk as if he is an insane person that needs help. He was teaching his kids how to skin an animal. The teacher did not make his students watch. If you didn't want to watch you didn't have to. Obviously the kids did not think it was very cruel if they wanted to watch. In arkansas, hunting is a big deal and interests alot of people around here. The majority of arkansas has seen an animal skinned before and gutted. Its no big deal. This teacher isn't crazy. He is a normal guy teaching an agriculture class.

Ok first off...why is it sick and cruel? It's an agri class...you learn about the anatomy of animals, different species of animals, origins of animals, etc. The class is designed to inform...not to be cruel...Yea shooting a raccoon with a nail gun is pretty barbaric...I would of just ran it over myself...another reason that pisses me off...is that stupid egomaniacal people shut down Arkansas. Why cuz they're from Connecticut or Florida? What's so great about those states...alligators? mosquitoes? the great New Haven? Arkansas is agriculturally rich and becoming a big ecomnomically developed state. Yea maybe killing a raccoon is cruel...but the teacher didn't even let his students watch the damn thing being killed...Like i said i would of ran it over...and over and over...you can talk all you want about the teacher..but why the hell do you people have to dog Arkansas?

I just Googled "teacher kills raccoon with nail gun".
Interesting that the very first page had news stories on this from:

TV40-29..........Fort Smith, AR
ABC24.......... Memphis, TN
NBC5.......... Dallas/Fort Worth, TX
KSDK5.......... St. Louis, MO
The Morning News ...Bentonville, AR
The Miami Herald....Miami, Fl

Notice that TWO stories came from none other the raccoon skinning capital of the US...Arkansas.
If it's common place, why would an AR news outlet bother?

Everyone acts like this was such a cruel thing to do. The teacher is an agri teacher. People in Arkansas and other southern staes do this thing called hunting.During hunting you shoot and kill an animal. Then you have to dress it and process the meat. Part of that process is skinning the animal, it's not like he just decided that "hey i'm gonna skin an animal during english class. He was teaching these kids a lesson in the course they were taking. They needed to see first hand the different parts that could be used for meat in animal. They weren't just looking at it's intestines for fun. Everyone who is on an animal cruelty kick on this issue should consider their views next time the eat a hamburger. How do u think u kill cattle at a slaughterhouse????? By injecting a metal bolt into their brain. Hmmmm sounds similar to a nail gun. So, I hope none of you eat a damn steak unless it states " no animal was harmed in the making of this delicious T-Bone" Idiots.

These people are ignorant who are freaking out about this. There is nothing wrong with they way he killed it. You tree huggers are just looking for something to make a big deal about so you might feel like you have made a impact in your pathetic world. People skin coons all the time it is not a big deal.
You guys say this is what is wrong with the world. Actually your whats wrong with this world. More kids need to be around this. They just take for granted the piece of meat lieing in front of them. They ahve no idea it gets there. This is what animal rights people do they take some story and blow it up. They dont help animals. They are just trying to ruin the life of a good ag teacher. If all yall think this is sad just look at what PETA is doing. They had to employees charged with animal cruelty. They were caught dumping dead dogs into a dumpster. They killed over 14,000 animals from 1998-2005. petakills.com and see the real story. They have killed more animals than one Huntsville Ag teacher. so if your looking to crucify somebody you might want to look around a little and find somebody who actually deserves it.

Because a hippy teacher called the news instead of going to the superintendent which would of been the correct protocol. The news that gets broadcast nowadays isn't news at all go take a dump in your backyard let you neighbor call the new station and see yourself on the news ruining the enviroment. Will be writing comments on how you have started global warming everything gets out of control by the way how many of our boys was killed in Iraq yesterday......the day before... does anybody care.... they don't want to inform us about that

Look, I went to Huntsville and personally know Mr. H. He didn't kill the coon in front of the class. He had it in his back office and shot it in the head. He was able to keep the same lesson plan. Raccoons are all over here, and I would actually feel no sympathy if I hit one with a car. I don't have any sympathy for the coon Mr. H shot dead. The animal didn't suffer. Coons will drown dogs in their own water bowl if they get a chance. If you're from the freaking city don't even bother posting like you've had any experience with wild animals. Just shut up and quit bitching. There's a war going on where U.S. soldiers are dying every day. Who cares about 1 damn coon?

Looks like you may be focused on this too much yourself.
