I dono' if it's a sign of the times or what..
but society is becoming more and more violent -

not so long ago, murder over here in
my small country - Ireland, would be a rarity
but nowadays things are so very different
[pause here, Geez I sound so like my late mother]

but anyway,

it is a fact, and
where O where is it coming from, violent robberies ..

cash urgently needed, why?
is it because we are a consumer driven society now?

is it coming from the subtleties of
'advertising'?

ie.. You 'MUST HAVE'

Take the newest 1Phone,
we are told 'YOU'VE GOTTA HAVE THIS'
or you are a lesser person

[whilst 'that is not 'said' outright

more effectively, it is implied
in clever advertising]

and there are the weak minded who
'believe' this.. and if they cannot afford one,

they rob and steal to simply have one.

I had an 1phone, I was given it.. as a gift..
yes, it was a fine phone, but I have another one now,
which is not an 1Phone, less elaborate but works
every bit as

well.

Have we, at least,
'some of us' lost th
e run of ourselves,'must' we
have a cell phone that guarantees it will CALL YOU
in the morning, perhaps boil the kettle and make
your coffee! sing you to sleep at night??

and
'WHY' all that?

surely all that IS necessary from a cell phone is >
to make & take a call, allow you to text and read
an incoming text - is all that's necessary,
it doesn't have to have a built in facility
that enables it to dance a jig too!!!!!

but I use this as just one example..

We are told by the advertisers that we NEED
all these appendages

and how..
if ready cash isn't available
to the weaker minded among us.

through break-ins? violent robberies?
beatings?

coming from feelings of
built-in and pent-up frustrations
at NOT being able to buy these items
which are held in such high regard
and the frightening thing is...
they come at a cost, and what a cost!..

killing someone for his money
to acquire such items..

WHERE is the cut off point

if you cannot afford the item so highly advertised,
you obtain it/them by foul means..

What prompted me .. and brought this
foremost in my mind was..
a few days ago, there was a violent robbery
in a rural town not so far away from me,
an innocent man, who minded his own business -
never harmed a soul,

sadly
the opposite, it was reported he was known to be one quick to do
his fellow man a good turn-

This weekend he was broken into, tied up, badly beaten
for hours, trying to break him down for
'his money'

eventually the horrid perpetrators of this

unpardonable crime left

[probably having found the money]
but that's not important.. now

they left him tied up,
so tight, the wire cut deeply
into his hands and feet, cutting of his
blood supply;
they never even called an ambulance
anonmyously..
they left him to die a slow agonizing death.
and ALL for the age old
'30 pieces of silver!

His family found him dead on Sunday.

Why?

What's happening?
'why' and 'how' does one lose the spark of
humanity that I foolishly thought
was common and sacrosanct in us all..

and now I,
am saddened to find
it is not.

Thanks! OLG,[lol]

but I honestly believe there are many sparks of

here on Offbeat;

just wondering 'generally' speaking.. what folks think

It is an age old theme. Going back to Cain and Abel even. Greed will always be. Sad indeed.

Grace, a million factors neccessitate why people do what they do. Most of the time they have this need to keep up with the Joneses. The Joneses work hard for everything they have and the Brown's who lack morals and scruples, steal from everybody around them. The people who steal, pillage, plunder, add to that, drugs, add to that already dealing with a screw loose, add to that acts of desperation, and add to that the sadistic, the twisted, and you have the makings of a society that unfortunately, have no conscience and do what they do. Prisons are overcrowded, and there are no role models. If you recall those children, who killed that younger child on the railroad tracks in England, they should have been sent away for ten lifetimes. I wonder if someone really does judge them after they have gone to their repose. How about the thousands upon thousands of other heinous crimes that are not horrible enough to make the headlines? We just know what we read or see. in a way I find this comforting, if we really knew the high statistics of the evil that men do, would any one of us even dare leave the house? I dont believe that even in our house we are that safe anymore. You would think that we never came out of the dark ages.

VERY interesting post Vee
and thanks for your reply..

I take your points,
I also believe a LOT of it starts in
the home
[not all, of course]
but there can be 'an evil gene'
handed down..

AGAIN here only last night since I wrote,
a young man as he walked the streets
with his 9 yr old son,
a BMW drew up someone popped out and riddled him
with bullets in the time it would take to
blink an eye!
this dead man had a history, stabbed someone
in jail previous and did time
for it -
the vicious circle continues,

and a young child's mind,
that must harbour that memory ..
disturbed for life :

The two you mentioned in the case
of JAMIE BOLGER,
they too, came from disturbed backgrounds.

You say
'one would think we never came out of
the dark ages'

true in a way,
but what always fascinates me is..

on the one hand.. we have
the dark side of 'man'
as mentioned in posts above
but running parallel with that
is how the human-being has advanced,

what mind numbing technology >

few examples of many:

Men having explored the moon.

State-of-the-art
telescopes that can track distant galaxies:

Air travel itself:

Micro surgery:

etc... etc..

and together with all that
the time old urge/instinct for killing and revenge!

SHOULD HAVE SAID, at the outset >

WHY I called this thread "SERIOUS DISCUSSIONS"..
is...

so many other threads end up in
stuff about GENO & Co... and what 'you said/I said' Geno [whom I don't know] even
as long as I'm here] plus what he did or said..
or very probably never said ..

It's getting more difficult to 'stay on topic'
and have any sort of serious discussion.. here..

but a thread - such as this -
giving it > SERIOUS DISCUSSIONS 'a go' at least a try -
and if it doesn't work - it doesn't work

so be it - move on -
[in my now long life I've leaned that]

....were it to work - look, how beneficial it 'could' be for
various ppl who had/have a problem they would like
aired, thereby getting help here..
by talking.. and others giving benefit of THEIR
experience:

Grace, you know I love you like a sister, but "sparks of honest decency?"

How about too much TV?

***keying in Don Hendley's "Dirty Laundry***

The media, movies, shows, violence, murder, rape, robbery, etc. are all to blame.

Give those kids something other than TV to watch in their spare time. I wasn't any different - we watched TV and emulated all the shows - Combat, Desert Rats, Munsters, 3 Stooges, etc. I grew up with a toy gun in my hands playing "army" with all my friends. Was that any different than today's kids playing "World of Warcraft?"

It's the world in which we live - the world we inherited. Sometimes you just got to look harder to find that silver lining - I found it pays to where my "seein' far away" glasses sometimes.

Appreciate your reply..

LOL..

Regarding your first line -

Thanks indeed!..... but...

NO, I didn't know..
but I do now(:

Yes I partly agree,
we all emulated certain stars,
I wanted to be like MARILYN MONROE![lol]

I wanted a fella tough and handsome
as CLINT EASTWOOD ..
life looked dead simple back then !!! Ha.

but soon I learned these people were
'thin on the ground'

and
how life really is ..

SOME of us out grow all that fantasy,
develop character, our own 'self worth' etc
and are happy being ourselves,
not someone else..
whilst others do not !

therein lies the difference..

I'm a professional engineer.

I try to stay away from imaginary and psychological answers and try to develop real, calculated solutions.

I truely belive that the population has gotten the best of us. The laws of averages was the same back in the 50's as it is now. You only see more "crazies" out there because there are more of us out here. The ratio of schitzoids to normal people has never changed - we just see a lot more of them nowadays. They had serial killers back in the 50's - just not a lot of them because the population was a lot less.

The only thing that has really changed is money. Money changes everything. When the economy improves, crime rates recede. The only exception to that rule is when a community spends more on policing - more police presence reduces crime also. Of course at what price to the taxpayer?

It's an endless quandry that will not soon be answered.

BTW - Clint talks to empty chairs.

Thank You,

but .. no matter what.. fads etc. that

the HUMAN BEING has a way of climbing back
on top..and getting to grips with whatever situation.

When you think of it DINOSAURS ruled the earth

Hi Grace, I agree that it is scary what we are hearing. I just watched on the news about 6 teens who beat a disabled person for no reason. And then they posted it on their facebook. They have all been arrested but there just is no sense to this. And this is the stuff we are hearing about now.

Great thread! Hope your day is going well.:)hugs

Melding the violence you've written about and technology you mentioned:

I saw a news report about 'apple picking' which is increasingly done by violent means over here. I'm referring to the stealing of iPads and iPhones. The specific report I saw was about someone ramming about 5 vehicles and grabbing what they could get. And a review about a previous incident where a sport utility vehicle smashed into an Apple Store somewhere to grab as many units as he could.

If you've a new Apple device in particular, beware.

i reckon - persuade him to turn himself over to the police. he could get (or ask for) a psych evaluation and may consequently get therapy not jail. if he gets jail - he'll have paid for his crime and won't (hopefully) feel the need to punish himself by suicide attempts.

idk if it is a modern day problem. peeps have always stolen and fought - only now there is more technology and more goods to steal because we have more. each generation, i reckon, reviews themselves through rose tinted specs when it comes to the next generation - they may not have done - whatever - in their day, but sure enough they did something bad - and sections of that generation were just as violent. violent crime is not new - the reason a peep wasn't attacked for their i-phone years ago is only because they didn't have one. going back in history you'd get mugged for food, now most of us here have food - the stakes have upped. animals will fight over food, territory and even objects they desire - whether they are of significant worth to the taker or not. i reckon it's the way of nature. not so long ago youngsters would take other youngsters trainers or bags (or jumping jacks, yoyo, sweets) or whatever was the fashion. the thing with technological items is that it's not just a fashion or young peep commodity.
