Why is Topix Viewership Shrinking?

Lately, whenever I come to this forum, the bookmark type ad to the left, seems to screw up my screen. It freezes and keeps trying to load to no avail. I usually have to end the program and then come back again. That shouldn't have to be just for the purpose of an ad. I understand that topix needs ads to pay for this site, but it's getting a little ridiculous when the ads defeat the purpose of topix, which is to converse and have fun.

I like this site. I've been on here for many years and I enjoy it. I'll keep coming back. Despite all the trolls, it's like a second home to me.

The "ad issue" for me is the ad at the top of the page. It loads and then up pops a pop-up saying the page can't be displayed & then I get an error screen. I have to refresh the screen over and over and over until I get an ad that's not so offensive to my computer.(This old machine is a P.O.S.) At home it's not so bad but seems to take forever for the page to load due to ads.

I think when they lost their affiliation with the newspapers, that was a huge blow and absent good visionary leadership a downward spiral was inevitable.
I understand that they need revenue and I'm not sure what the answer is, to be honest. I could have told you, however, when they lost the newspaper affiliation that staying the same was not a viable option ... Which is what they did, for the most part.
There's no way to get new blood and most of the folks who are still here are remnants of those days ... mostly because they developed friendships with folks to varying degrees. Even with that, there still is attrition with many folks gradually dropping out over time.
What I think would be more interesting would be if they had expanded folks profile options a lot and steered the website towards a hybrid between what Facebook (false names, tho) and what they currently have, but with the news story aspect too. No gray boxes.
You can't stay the same in this industry ... You have to evolve ... You have to innovate. This industry almost more than any. None of this existed 15-20 years ago ... That shows you how fast it moves. MySpace was created 10 years ago, took off like a rocket, and then died too. You can either evolve or die. You can either innovate and be ahead of the game or languish.
There is no evolution with topix and the business model they have while perfectly good when they were affiliated with newspapers and had a captive audience, is now a non-starter. It's really only a question of when it ends, not if.
If managed right and with foresight it had potential. It already had members ... Given this, it would have been much easier to evolve topix than build something new from the ground up. Nothing much has been done for years, however. It's like owning a manufacturing business and not making any capital investments ... Eventually you go out of business.
To me it seems they took many of the things Topix users complained about and implemented them on Politix. You must have a profile, comments are deleted quickly. Moderators encourage posters to remain on topic. No icons, vote ups are like the thumbs up.

Good indication big brother is interjecting . When the add is before you, there is little place to touch to roll the screen. They put a " hidden " button in the likely touch , then your had. Bahaha

I don’t know why focusing so much on a niche, in this case politics, is a better business model than a forum such as topix that has politics and other subjects folks can discuss. They could have done what they did with politix to topix and just made the political aspect a subset.
I also think giving folks more freedom with their profiles and allowing folks to join groups, kind of like nbcnews has “nations” for those who comment on their articles, would be good too. Iff nbcnews is doing stuff like this, there must be a reason. They aren’t just doing this for no reason. They also aren’t just staying the same.

Your audience is much smaller when all you have is politics. I say this even though, I like politics … I like discussing it, but even I don’t want to do that all the time. Much of their potential audience is even more adverse to politics than I am.

It seems they’ve basically decided to let topix wither on the vine and instead have chosen to target a much smaller subset of their potential audience, when there is really no reason why they couldn’t target a wider swath of their potential audience and create an environment that is open it up to discussions other than politics. I liken it to GM deciding it would be good for business to focus exclusively on trucks going forward and make no further updates to any other vehicles, which would eventually lead to their obsolesces. How is that a good business model? You’d get laughed out of a board room if that were your business model. I think the model is dog shyte.

Topix is privately owned; yes? Probably has a bunch of yes men/women on the board who are followers and close friends instead of folks willing to ask tough questions.
