Music used to have messages that were meant to uplift, to remind us of a responsibility to others instead of hate.... you could understand the words and they were worth listening to....

One for the trolls and others who think they are so clever to trick 'newbies', to hurt others for no reason but to do so.... or to 'win'...often while talking about the God they believe in....
though I don't know what they are winning...

"One Tin Soldier"
In the song the people of the mountain (I have been to the mountain top) say "With our brothers we will share all the secrets of the mountain, all the riches buried there," but the valley people are greedy and want the entire treasure not just part of it so they then start a war to take it.

Ironic, isn't it.

Im gonna be just like you

We Shall Be Free'
--Garth Brooks (1992)

When one of the most successful country artists -- audaciously sang "When we're free to love anyone we choose" in this gospel-influenced number, many took it as an endorsement of gay rights. Brooks made the connection more explicit at 2000's Equality Rocks, where he was the only straight male to perform.

Ah yes....songs that meant something,,Indeed..Good topic...and refreshing for the memory. The 70's and 80's had some incredible ones, the Archies "Sugar Sugar" comes to mind....as does Cyndi Laupers heartrending "Girls Just wanna have fun" a renewed and re invigorated national anthem for all Sarah Palin idolizers . "Whooly Bully" is another inspiring tune , and so may be the song of all songs ...The Bee Gees inspiring call to arms: "Stayin Alive" WHo can forget the heartrending reprise "Arf ARF ARF ARf ...staying alive !! Staying Alive!!!!

'I Ain't Marching Anymore'
--Phil Ochs (1965)

Rebelling Against: War!

The fearless Ochs took Dylan-style folk to another level of topicality, attacking big business, blind patriotism, Jim Crow segregation, even hypocritical liberalism in frank terms worthy of a true outsider. A hero to latter-day rabblerousers Billy Bragg, Eddie Vedder and Sean Penn, Ochs died by hanging, supposed suicide. You have to wonder about the suicides of those who stand up to the power of government. He dedicated this preformance to NATO.

It is always the old that lead us to war, it is always the young who die.

^^^^ BTW those supposedly out of control 'mob' lynchings were sometimes advertised ahead of time in the local newspapers just as Klan meeting were even in the north....
