We have those little bastards here in Brazil. They' re actually aggressive, and will attack if they feel threatened. And by threatened, I mean being in the same room with them. The get back on their back legs and spread their other legs out in an aggressive posture, then run and jump at you. They even say to not try and kill them because it just pisses them off. "Just get the f*** away from them fast" is the official advice from local biologists.

Sounds like excellent justification for a pest control contract! I suppose by now they are immune to Raid

The only kind of spiders I think are cool and I don't mind having them sit on my hand are Tarantula. They seem to be pretty mellow, as long as you just let them sit on your hand they enjoy the warmth, I got interested in them (embarrassed to admit this) watching old sci-fi monster movies with giant ones that attacked the town! Those kind of old movies are one of my guilty pleasures.

i was bitten by a brown recluse last year. it took only 4 days (waiting to see a doctor), for it to fester and become very infected. i had to have surgery because in just 4 days the infection went to the bone.those little buggers are fast...i was unaware of the bite for two of those 4 days.....it was a bite just below the elastic band on my underwear. i have a friend who has a 3 by 6 inch scar on her thigh...won't wear shorts. and me, Slim and Sexy? i too am slim and sexy and that and that spider did not give a damn. now i have a scar on my ass that looks like i was shot in the butt. soooooo, happy spidering.

Lol, glad to see you made it through OK Carolyne, you were very lucky.

There are different kinds of Brown Recluse spiders, some more dangerous than others, and some more aggressive. Here in Brazil, there are strains that if bitten, you would require medical attention immidiately, or risk death. And some of the little buggers will go out of their way to bite you. Fortunately they're rare in the city.
Happy spidering!

Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of the heavy metal band Slayer, died of liver failure. He was 49.
The founding member of Slayer whose career was irrevocably changed after a spider bite. He had been slowly recovering from what was believed to be a spider bite 4 years ago, that nearly cost him his arm after he failed to seek immediate treatment.
From the Huffingtonpost.com

Here is a picture showing damage to his arm:
