Democrats’ plans to expand education and health benefits for veterans died in the Senate on Thursday after Republicans blocked the bill for not having a funding source and thus busting the budget all sides agreed to just two months ago.

It was paid for primarily through war money that will not be spent as troops pull out of Afghanistan, which Republicans say is a gimmick.

Mr. Sanders acknowledged that the $21 billion price tag isn’t cheap

Eliminate lobbyists from the face of the earth. You take the money out of being a Congressperson and even republican reps will (maybe) concentrate on doing their jobs, serving the people.
You like to think that oil companies and other wealthy corporations can fend for themselves without congresspersons or Topixtards representing them. Force the wealthy to pull themselves up by their Gucci bootstraps and fend for themselves!
Well, that's what Jesus would do. But, we are not a Christian nation....
I wonder what happened to Obla blah's promise to eliminate lobbyists? Harry Reid must've changed his mind.

Social Security provides vital financial support for more than 56 million beneficiaries. Social Security also provides critical benefits to widows and those with disabilities

Social Security is funded by the payroll taxes of current workers to pay the benefits of current retirees. Projected long run program costs are not sustainable under the current program. The Social Security Trustees project that the cash flow deficits that began in 2010 will continue permanently.

According to the most recent Social Security Trustees Report, beneficiaries will face a painful 23 percent benefit cut in 2033 when the Trust Funds are exhausted.

"How-To Lower the National Debt "???

Don't count on that EVER happening.

Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats, nor any combination thereof, will EVER solve the debt obligations they have gotten us into...and I don't think they really want to, as long as they have the opposite party to blame for not going along with their plans.

What they have done so far (called Sequestration) is just political theater.
The plan is to cut $1trln over 10 years...this covers only ONE year of Obama administration deficits, does nothing for the other seven years of trillion-dollar+ deficits, and absolutely nothing for the debt exiting previously.

And somehow I don't think that's the worst part...that is, if there was a group of people that had the political will to cut the national debt in a significant way, they would have to slaughter so many sacred cows the people would vote them out at the next election.

I think most politicians are hoping for the same thing I am...that it doesn't all come crashing down before I'm gone...this strategy has worked for at least a couple of generations of politicians.

Lower the debt by:

-Stop electing no-budget, tax and spend Democrats; and
-Start collecting taxes from all of those Democrats that are always crying
about everyone paying their fair share.

I support unemployment benefits for the 26 weeks that they're paid for. If you extend it beyond that, you do a disservice to these workers. There was a study that came out a few months ago, and it said, if you have a worker that's been unemployed for four weeks and on unemployment insurance and one that's on 99 weeks, which would you hire? Every employer, nearly 100 percent, said they will always hire the person who's been out of work four weeks. When you allow people to be on unemployment insurance for 99 weeks, you're causing them to become part of this perpetual unemployed group in our economy. And it really—while it seems good, it actually does a disservice to the people you're trying to help.

Did you know 1/2 the GDP is paid in interest?
On December 12, 2013, debt held by the public was approximately $12.312 trillion or about 73% of Q3 2013 GDP Intragovernmental holdings stood at $4.9 trillion (29%), giving a combined total public debt of $17.226 trillion or over 100% GDP. As of January 2013,$5 trillion or approximately 47% of the debt held by the public was owned by foreign investors, the largest of which were the People's Republic of China and Japan at just over $1.1 trillion each.

The Federal Budget
Washington will spend nearly $3.5 trillion in 2013 while collecting $2.8 trillion in revenues, resulting in a deficit of $642 billion.
Over the past 20 years, federal spending grew 63 percent faster than inflation.
Mandatory spending, including Social Security and means-tested entitlements, doubled after adjusting for inflation. Discretionary spending grew by 49 percent.
Despite publicly held debt surging to three-fourths the size of the economy (as measured by GDP), net interest costs have fallen as interest rates have dropped to historic lows.
In 1963, defense spending was 9 percent of GDP and mandatory spending on entitlement programs was 6.1 percent of GDP, one-third lower.
In 2013, spending on defense is at about 4 percent of GDP while mandatory spending is reaching 14.5 percent of GDP
In 2012, the U.S. will spend around $220 billion in net interest on its debt, according to the Congressional Budget Office around 6 percent of the total federal budget and 1.4 percent of GDP.
