I was watching a show on TV about M.P.D and I was wondering if it's really possible for a person to suffer of it.
They said that is usually people who have been sexually abused who developed it. They can created as many identities as needed to be able to deal with what happened to them.
Medical people believe in it, on the legal part, not so much.
What is your take on this ? Just curious.

It's actually Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). MPD is the old term but still used in the international community.

DID is a relatvely rare disorder, but I did encounter a woman with it while serving my graduate internship at a women's counselling center. It was a terribly sad case. She was sexually abused as a child by her father and uncle. She was so traumatized that she began to depersonalize. DID is extremely difficult to treat and requires intensive psychotherapy. It was the most difficult case in my short career.

I just thought it was a kind of craziness...

I know a woman who claimed to have 9 different personalities... It was a ruse... She did a lot of reading on the subject and played the part well enough to recieve disability checks for over 5 years... Then they found her out and she's real lucky she didn't end up in jail for fraud... I do think that the mind has the ability to shut out things and that perhaps MPD is real for some.. but more often than not I think it's bunk... I discussed this with a mental health professional and she told me that MPD is very rare but that there have been documented cases of it that were real.. So I guess it does actually occur... I suppose the most famous case was that of Sybil the one they made the movie about.. Her's was very well documented and observed...

Never see the movie, I think, unless the title was different in France...I will google it...But I saw that name here on Topix and never understood why they called someone Sybil ! I guess they were referring to the movie ! LOL ! I keep asking to myself : who the heck is that Sybil, never saw her name before !! I feel kind of duh !
I kind of believe in it...The brain is the most difficult part to analyze or figure out, so everything is possibly under that tiny space !
Got to check on Sybil...

Hi Brigette... Yep that's the reason that some of the people on this website get called Sybil.. The movie starred Sally Fields and it is a disturbing view of what life must be like for someone who actually suffers from MPD... Another movie that deals with the same subject is called Identity and it stars John Cusack it was made in 2003... The human brain is much like the ocean in my opinion we all know it's there but we have no idea whats really in it..
:o)

The real "Sybil" was recently identified as Shirley Ardell Mason, an art teacher who died in 1998 at the age of 75 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The first movie I recall seeing that dealt with this subject was The Three faces of Eve... It stared JoAnne Woodword as a woman with three different personalities...and it was made in 1957..

Now about the Sweetie Pie comment... I don't believe that SP suffers from MPD however I do belive SP to be very mentally ill.. SP's obssessive behavior and inability to show any self control leads me to believe that SP should seek professional help for those issues as soon as possible.. SP's delusions have led her to believe that I am the person known here as Ozzie as well as Laura Beth and having convinced herself of this she continues to demonstrate the level of her illness by stalking and obsession in regard to myself. As I said I do not believe SP has MPD simply a case of obssession which is very unhealthy...

I hope that you are having a great night Brigette and that in some way this information such as it is helps you in your quest to understand that particular mental illness...
Wishing you Peace, Love, Health and Happiness...

WBR is right about the real Sybil, Bridgitte.
There was a book out before the movie, that tells this woman's incredible story of survival of the mind.

Another good book on this subject is "When Rabbit Howls". Warning, it will break your heart.

Enjoy your long week-end....Cannot comment on SP, I'm lost in all these names and I have no idea what's going on...! So, I guess, I'll have to take your word for it !

I also checked on the book and story you are mentioning. I can tell, it must be a very moving story...I'd like to read the book. Definitely will look for it.

I'm so surprise that MPD is related to sexual abuse. I NEVER knew or heard about that.

BTW, I made a mistake, I mixed the numbers of personalities (!!). 90 was actually from what I read about the book you're talking about...
Too early....need more coffee !
Thanks again for posting...

The first time I tried to read "When Rabbit Howls" I only got about halfway through. I could not read it, it was that horrifying. Now I've read all of Stephen King's work, but the fact that this actually happened to a little girl made it totally different. I read the rest of it a couple of years later, and can still remember most of it. It's one of the most awful things you'll ever read. One can understand the creation of different personalities to cope with the abuse. I'll never understand why people are so cruel.

What is even more surprising, are those who, when hearing of sexual abuse, belittle the person abused and call them names......

Yes the books When Rabbit Howls, A fractured mind, Sybil, Flock are disturbing.
Yet they are a fascinating study of the mind to cope with an unreal reality and still allow the body to function and survive.

Personally, I think it is more common than psychiatrist's think it is. That some MPD's live their (many) lives with out mental health care at all.

Demonstrating that MPD is the ultimate successful coping mechanism of brilliant minds.

Here is a link to a list of books on the subject:
