I think it's the only place I have ever really wanted to visit. I have followed the AIDS epidemic very closely....world wide. The large # of AIDS patients in Africa has nothing to do with the ppl of the continent. It was started there by an ambitious scientist who used the ppl for testing a new vaccine. Unfortunately for those ppl the vaccine was tainted w/this virus. The ppl of Africa were just guinea pigs. No surprise considering how these ppl have been treated by other countries.

@arctic, Most African countries have been recording significant drops in HIV/AIDS infection cases due to massive awareness campaigns. Plus the ARVs help people atleast prolong their lives. It's good news and a first critical step in the right direction.

After they filed law suits against major pharmaceutical companies to release the patent on ARVs and make them more accessible to the general public. Mostly it's the education. When ppl understand the disease they can prevent infection.

As far as Hollywood goes the only movies I can remember about Africa is Blood Diamond and Under the Sun (which btw used African actors). Both movies (basically) were about the damage the "rebels" do to the continent.

Some potray primitivity on the part of Africans themselves. The Gods must be crazy made westerners think that all Africans live in the bush like the Kalahari Bushmen. You know what I mean. On CNN, I stopped watching it. I prefer Quatar's Aljazeera English news. I have never seen anything positive covered by most western media. Just wars, famine and diseases. Nobody has covered the fact that Kenya has the newly completed Thika Highway which is an 8 to 10 lane superhighway making it East Africa's busiest highway! They'd rather focus on the wars in Congo and Sudan. Africans are perceived as very illiterate people in the world. Smdh. It's really unfair.

We do see the bad and not the good most of the time. I was surprised to see a program on Animal Planet recently about the ASPCA in Cape Town. Why it surprised me that Africans put the same value on the lives of animals as we do I don't know. (maybe b/c I know how they are treated in other parts of the world like Mexico and the Middle East.) But the ASPCA there did a great job of rescuing animals from bad situations and helping to educate the public on how to care for animals. It was good to see.
