"residents are worried that the methane gas brought on by decomposition could cause the animal to burst."

After it swells up good and tight they could stick a pin hole in it, then light the escaping gas like a tiki torch and have a whale of a beach party.

I read in another article where someone "tagged" (spray painted with graffiti) a beached whale. What they sprayed was not smart, unless they were framing a rival frat house. They painted their frat letters and charter number.

Whales are too heavy to move once they're out of the water - even if they didn't mind it fouling up the water, it'd break up even if not rotted from its own weight.

This is why beached whales are a problem when they're alive. They can't be safely dragged back into the supporting water. You have to hope a high enough tide comes in for them...or else dig a channel for enough ocean to flow in and under them, which no one has tried because it's not practical in a short term, engineering sense.

I know so much about this topic because I eat a lot of Ben and Jerry's, incidentally.
