Australian soldier's death in Adirondacks called suicide

NORTH ELBA, NY — Officials say the death of a man whose body was found by state Forest Rangers Wednesday near the summit of Scarface Mountain in the Adirondacks was a suicide.
Rangers located the body, tentatively identified as Paul J. McKay, a missing Australian soldier, in the town of North Elba shortly after 11 a.m.
According to the Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald's website, McKay, 31, a captain, was last seen on New Year's Eve walking on railroad tracks in the Adirondacks. He had sent an email to his father on Dec. 30 that said he was leaving all of his possessions to his father, the newspaper said.
According to the Herald, McKay was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder after a tour of Afghanistan and was on leave from the Australian Army.
State Police forensic investigators were flown to the mountain by helicopter.
The body flown by State Police to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake by New York State Police Aviation.
The autopsy was performed by Dr. C. Francis Varga at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, who ruled the cause of death as arrhythmia due to hypothermia. Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw has ruled the death a suicide.
