One small detail is all it takes to tip the scale when it comes to the public's perception of someone as a hero versus a villian.
He should never have mentioned eating the dog. He could have said that the dog wandered away or was drug off by the bear.
I'll bet that many of the New World and Artic explorers resorted to canibalism but never mentioned it in their memoirs afterward.
Excellent point Justin.
There are quite a few recorded cases of people in the deep freeze having to resort to sled dog consumption and or cannibalism.

This all could have been avoided if he left the dog at home with friends.

He doesn't sound very smart to me, a man who was supposedly experienced would have known you don't take a dog into bear territory.

"5. Do companion dogs keep bears away?
Dogs can sometimes keep bears away from a camp, but very often, a dog initially chases a bear and then the bear chases the dog right back to the camp. Dogs may also harass a bear unnecessarily or pique a bear's curiosity."

If this had happened in 1983, his story would have been featured in Readers Digest and Hollywood would be wanting to buy the rights to his story.

Unfortunately, in the age of social media, he's just this week's whipping boy, an outlet for which millions of anonymous small minded schmucks can vent their pent up rage.

The poor guy was near dead when they found him, and he probably didn't have the presence of mind to edit his account. But it really would have worked out better for him had he kept the part about eating the dog to himself.

I once had a Rottweiler that would have fed a family of 8 for about a month, depending on which one was the hungriest.

You know some of you people out there can be very mean to a person, it's ok to disagree with someone but not in the way some of you have been. Some of you here are just down right nasty and like to bully !

I wasn't bullying anyone or trying to be nasty to get my jollies off on someone or any other thread I post on. I was simply speaking out on how I thought, whether some of you posters thought I was right or wrong in the way I think.
Sorry if you took it so hard.....

He was stranded in the woods for three months. If he hadn't eaten the dog, the dog would have eventually eaten him.

With a pet sitter or friends, many people do that.

Are you saying you would leave a dog alone for three months???

I doubt he planned his hiking trip to last three months. In retrospect, taking that dog along was a good idea; it saved his life.

If he had a rifle, he could have shot the bear. Three hundred pounds of fatty bear meat would have fed both him and the dog for three months.
