Squirrels belong to family Sciuridae of small or medium-size rodents.
Would You!
No I wouldn't HH! I remember watching the Beverly Hillbillies. Possum Stew was often on their menu, lol!
When I was a kid, I went camping in the Appalachian mountains for about a week with my best friend and her family. We stayed at an old hunting cabin and it was in the Fall. No electricity and we each had to take a turn going out and getting water every morning. After curling up under the covers all night, it felt so cold having to go for water in the morning but it made me think about how it might have been a long time ago. Anyway, one night when we sat down to dinner, I asked what was on my plate. They all looked at each other and told me to try it as they all heartily dug into their meal. It tasted a bit stringy to me and had a weird taste, plus there was sauce all over it. I didn't like it at all and couldn't continue to finish it. My friend's dad lectured me about not appreciating the food that was offered to me, but it didn't matter. I just couldn't take another bite. After everyone was finished with their meal, my friend and her family were giggling and I asked them what they were laughing at. They said that we all just had pigeon! I was only about 8 at the time and I felt like I had to vomit. All I can say is pigeon is horrible. At least to me it was. My friend's father was a hunter and caught all of our meals. Can't remember what else we had, except that deer/venison was on the menu, too. I couldn't wait to get home and have my mother's home cooking again. Just the same, I'm happy to have had the experience of staying at that mountain retreat. There were a few other experiences on that trip including one that could have cost me my life. A huge rattlesnake was lying on a big rock as we were hiking one day. I was the closest to the snake. We all heard the rattling sound and my friend's father screamed at me to freeze. He immediately shot the snake in two. My friend got the rattle tail and still has it to this day.

WOW!

that was a narrow escape & so glad it worked in your favour..PH.

I remember when I was very young 6/7 yrs.. and had no experience of life,
I saw a HUGE workhorse in the middle of a field, leaping around madly
and twisting trying to free itself of wire it got caught in,
as I was always very sensitive to animals and their needs,
I climbed the locked gate,[there was no one around] with the intention
of freeing the horse from the wire..

I wouldn't have had a CLUE about the strength of such a powerful
animal against a little child .. a horse who would quickly have trampled me, in his state of anguish..

When I was on top of the gate just ready to climb over,
a farmer appeared out of nowhere and shouted so loudly at me to 'GET DOWN NOW,
OR HE WOULD CALL THE COPS!' Needless to say I ran away in fear QUICK AS I COULD!!

He too, saved my life that day.

My grandfather "Pop" always said there was 1 days difference between fat meat and lean.
In other words, if you weren't hungry enough to eat the fat today you would be tomorrow.
Pigeon is good if you like liver or heart (beef or pork), it is a dark stringy kind of meat but fixed properly it's delicious.
I've probably eaten more different kinds of meat than 90% of you. Ones I didn't favor were chicken hawk, ground hog, goose, sucker fish (too many bones), you name it I've tried it.

my uncle (originally from Missouri) was an avid coon hunter...didn't matter what kind of weather, if he was home (he worked on a tug boat) he was out every night hunting...my aunt would bake them with sweet potatoes...

Lol, you've got a point there, CC. But pigeon, yuk. Although, who knows what any of us would eat if we were so desperate. In some countries, they eat animals we consider to be pets. Others eat insects, etc. So, there are worse things to eat, that's for sure. Pigeons always remind me of when I was a child. I used to live across from a playground when I was a kid. The school was old and there were scores of pigeons that would sit on top of the eaves of the building. Bird droppings were everywhere; a real shyt zone. Kids often got pelted with droppings as they played.

Grace, you may very well have had a guardian angel by your side that day. Some people scoff at such things, but who can really know for certain. That's how I felt that day when I saw that snake. It was quite a big snake, too. I never knew that rattlers could get that big. I stared right at that snake as it was split in two by gunfire. I know I very likely wouldn't have survived if I had been suddenly bitten by that snake. Still gives me the shivers whenever I think about it.

I believe in guardian angels, even saw one once.
In the ceiling corner of ICU when my son was laying there in a comma.
(IT) said to me, he'll be OK!
