Bill To Regulate Pressure Cookers Gaining Steam

A bipartisan bill introduced on Monday will require background checks for pressure cooker sales and set limits on sales of nails and ball bearings.

House Bill 10-289, the 'Pressure Cooker Prevention of Crime and Protection of Children Act of 2013'(PCPCPCA) has already gained 391 sponsors spanning both of the two sides of the political spectrum, the Democrats and the Republicans.

However, despite the tragedy of April 15 in Boston, which killed three people including an innocent child, and injured hundreds including probably at least two dozen innocent, sweet little children, some politicians are actually opposing it.

"I know it's a cliche, but I'm gonna say it again - if pressure cookers are outlawed, then only outlaws will have pressure cookers" said Senator Rand Paul, a noted rabble-rouser and suspected right-wing Republican.

Other voices in Washington were more reasonable.

"I appreciate pressure cookers and respect the American pressure cooker culture" said Congressman Jack Slipjaw (D-South Dakota) "but the simple fact remains: nobody needs more than one pressure cooker, and nobody but a bloodthirsty terrorist needs one with greater than a 6-inch diameter. Background checks and a waiting period will save countless lives in the future, many of them innocent small beautiful children lives, like that one that was killed in Boston."

"The language in the bill is too vague" opined Rep. Randy Rootentooter (R-Hawaii). "A 5-day waiting period for 6-inch wide pressure cookers, but a 7-day period for cookers 8 1/4 inches wide or greater? These designations are arbitrary, and discussing them is just arguing semantics. Semantics with numbers instead of words."

A rider on page 391 of the bill concerning the purchase of nails and ball bearings is also drawing criticism. Senator Sassy Grassstain, another Republican politician from Alabama or Louisiana, may actually have her head screwed on straight. "We have taken many factors into consideration while considering the factors for sales of nails and ball-bearings, and have come to the logical conclusion that nails shorter than one inch cannot pierce vital organs and therefore will be allowed for sale without a nail-owner's permit. Anything longer than that is a deadly weapon or at least a dangerous one if used by an unqualified person to do home repairs that should only be tackled by a professional.

"Furthermore," he/she stated, "all purchases of ball bearings should be immediately eyed with suspicion. Think about it. When is the last time you've needed a box of ball bearings? Clearly only machine shops and terrorists need a whole box of deadly ball bearings."

The bill is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law on Tuesday.

Why no mass shootings in the 1940's and 1950's?

What was different then as opposed to now?

No meds, no video shooting games, a government (of,by,and for the people), we had two parent households, and we didn't abort 40 million unborn. Oh and by the way, more guns per household per capita back then.

Pay was good. The dollar had value. Opportunities for career and personal growth. Slower pace (healthier pace). Strong communities. Trust. Civility. aka - Prosperity.

Since then: "Career" is a series of gigs. We know about the sorry state of the dollar. The pace of life is hyper. People are isolated in their communities and don't know their neighbors or feel a responsibility for their well being. There is a lot of stress, uncertainty and desperation. There is a lot less civility. There is next to zero trust in our institutions.

In this environment some people make bad decisions ( abortion as an example). IMO some people aren't wired to cope with the stress - they snap. Under this level of pressure and potential isolation people look for quick fixes - and big pharma sees a market.

here's what 'i' come up with:

the knee-jerk emotional bullshit starts again (yes, just like the gun thread).

You know who isn't letting emotion take over logic? Every single first responder that is helping those people, every single person who will ever do anything productive to better a situation in the short or long term. Not all humans are as concerned about their personal emotions as you indicate.

I'll just sit back and wait for the claims that we are somehow more at risk now and how we need to make things safer. You go ahead and do the emotional thing.

Gourmet cooking store "William- Sonoma" announced yesterday that they won't sell pressure cookers anymore. How sad is that?

That is a bit dractice. They only need to ban high capacity pressure cookers :)A 000 shotgun shell has about 27 .25 projectiles. Talk about high capacity:) five rounds put out about 125 projectiles

You know.... I'm caught in the middle here.
My heart breaks for all the injured and the ones that died, it really does. But on the other hand I do have some good pressure cooker jokes brewing in my head. But I refrain, I still think it's early.....but who the heck am I?

Peace to all.....

Here's what I think about that. The ones who do that ( neg. iconers) have no life, no personality, no friends and diffently no balls. They are cowards, boot lickers, bottom dwellers, scum suckers who hide in the dark, lurking like a bunch of poosies.
If they had any balls they would confront us directly. But the are douche bags and would never do that.
They are jealous, pathetic, pitiful excuses for human beings and are a waste of space...leg humpers, and butt sniffers who should be put out of their Topix misery!!!:)
