To be 'good' these people require extrinsic motivation to do so. They have no inner moral compass.
Back in the old days, early 1900's, little children were taught to show respect for elders and authority figures. Religion played a bigger role in behavior. Family was more important, children wanted to please their parents, grandparents and family. Children could be spanked and punished for being 'bad'. There were a LOT more extrinsic motivators to be good.
Liberal attitudes have made it a sociopath's playground in the US.
They are in positions of power and looked up too in every area. Politicians, bankers, businessmen, teachers, police, lawyers, sports figures (Lance), and even military leaders are in the headlines TODAY. If the 24 out of 25 would go back to conservative ways, the 1 in 25 would have to go back in hiding.
So, are some born bad, well, without strict guidance, nurturing, rules and enforcement, it's easy for them to go there.
OK iconer? Let's see um. lol

That's a Tuffie question.. I would say "Good". Then again..did ya ever see the movie..The Bad Seed? Angelic face and manners.. UNTIL she couldn't get her own way. Or The Good Son? That kid was a deadly prankster?? You are innocent upon birth..Then are taught good guidelines to lead your life by..THEN...Peer Pressure. Appears.. the "I Dare Ya" or Ya wanna be a Sissy... Ya know, the "easy" way is usually the Dark Side's way..WHEN ya work hard for what you want.then that's the Good Life...

while at one time I believed, and still do to an extent that spanking a child as a form of discipline was a sure way to get results, I have learned through the last 19 years of parenting that there are better ways to motivate a child then showing them that you are bigger and stronger then they are and if they don't obey you you may have to physically prove to them that you are the master by inflicting pain on them. While a simple swat on the hind end may be a attention getter, parents back in the 1900s would rarely stop at that. Hitting a child is never a good way to show them discipline, it's more a way to show dominance over them and while they may give in to your demands at the time, what your teaching them may not be what you think.people Aren't dogs and you can't teach them to not sh!t on the floor by rubbing their nose in it.
Now this is me talking from my experience in raising my 4 children and just like anything through out time and trial and error you learn better ways to get positive results.my oldest son was spanked many times and the end results proves he is not any better because of it. I'm just sorry to this day that I didn't approach his discipline in a more positive way and I often apologize to him and explain to him being a dad is easy, but being a good dad takes time.

Well according to Christians we are born bad and therefore require a second birth.
I was born unfortunate to be dealt a bad set of cards. My mother didn't love her babies and the abuse I was raised with has had a bad effect on my life. We are supposed to be able to overcome, blablabla.
Regardless, I have always tried to be good. I've given when I was in need, I tried to understand the faith it took to do it God's way and NO, I don't believe in Karma.
I do believe good people can turn bad or go completely mad believing they deserved better; even better than some of the so-called Christians.
Amen brother, amen to that.

My main point was that some people need external reasons to do the right thing. Some will be 'good' for social acceptance (I'd say more females than males on that one), some will be good for money (maddoff- well good for a while- lol) like prostitutes (lol), some will be good for sex (prostitutes- Gene S. lol), some for power- police, teachers, politicians, military leaders, Priests!,, some for drugs and rock and roll (fame-Lance/Lindsay/Gene S.),, to go to Heaven/avoid Hell, avoid prison/tickets, and on and on.
Now spanking? I have mixed feelings about that. Don't think it helps all children, some shouldn't be spanked. My dad spanked me hard once, I think at about 4 years old. It left his hand print on my leg (I jumped and he missed the target.) and hurt A LOT!(He was a WWII vet and passed away about 13 years ago- a good man, sang solo's in the church choir, was a principal etc.) I'm not sure why, but until the day he died, I had dreams about beating him up every now and then- I think it was because he spanked me. I can't remember spanking my kids, never did it 'formally' lol? Actually, come to think of it, my dad could hurt you with words more than a spanking, so there are lots of ways to inflict pain.

Misbehavior often goes in cycles.
The nuts don't fall too far from the tree! lol
The prisons are full....
Did you see where the 15 year old in NM killed his whole family and his dad was allegedly a saint- a church pastor?
Hmmmm........

(It's weird how when someone dies they become a saint, isn't it?)

What about sociopaths?

They can usually tell when you're a child if you are one.

I agree.

I think peoPle get a little sensitive because we are judging a 'child'. But we were all children at one point.

I can't seperate a person of any age as 'age'. We were all children and most of us will become old seniors.

They are stages of life.

If you think of all the kids in your class back when you were a child.... It is/was and still can be, that the little boy who sat behind you picking his nose has become a serial killer, the little girl who sat infront of you who had super cute pigtails beats her kids.

All evil doers were Infact once children. And they sat amongst their fellow classmates. We didn't know.

Sure evil can be taught but I strongly believe some souls are just not intact. Something went wrong and the conscious to the unconscious is missing a link. Or there was never a complete soul to begin with.

Not the real smart ones, their (not me, of course, lol) IQ's can go from 0-200 (OK, let's say, 50-160).
The 140 IQ's usually stay out of trouble- but can cause plenty of it and sit back and watch!
The 75-90's (males) are often in jail by 35.

Smart ones can be cleaver and smart- to get what they want.
I always think of Eddie Haskell on Leave It To Beaver saying, "Gee, Mrs. Cleever, your hair looks nice today."

That reminds me, I wonder if Kim Kardashian is still going to make that video-'Leave It To Beaver'?
I don't know, if they show her having the baby, it might fly out and give the Dr a bloody nose. lol

well Fisherman I can agree with you on that..I have a son and daughter..my son had to be shown so yes I spanked him but he knew then and still does to this day what mom says she will do, she will.My daughter I could talk to and never ever spanked her..she is a beautiful woman inside and out...so yes it varies..but all in how you raise them it stays but parents should never be blamed for how they turn out after 21..a parent can only do so much the rest is left up to the child when he or she becomes an adult.IMP only...

Hell yea and why? There are good and bad in adults and children and no the little bastards cannot have exuses made up for them. It seems cruel but if we can identify the "deffective" people then a green needle will do wonders.

I happened on this thread by accident and want to thank everyone for all different opinions. Why we are good or bad has always been a question for me.As an abused child at a young age I have to say that when the parents are blamed it is wrong. After a certain age you have to make your own choices. You have to decide you want respect and then in turn give respect. I still don't know the real answer to are we born bad but I am really proud of how I turned out despite my environment. All a person can do is try not to repeat the mistakes made before us.

If only everyone had your attitude. good on you for turning things around and getting on with life and making that connection that no matter what your past is you as an adult are responsible for your choices. There is to much of finger-pointing and blaming these days. We live in a society that's full of people passing the buck so how refreshing it is to come across your post.
