Perseverance is a positive, active characteristic. It is not idly, passively waiting and hoping for some good thing to happen. It gives us hope by helping us realize that the righteous suffer no failure except in giving up and no longer trying. We must never give up, regardless of temptations, frustrations, disappointments, or discouragements. ~ Joseph B. Wirthlin

"Could he not find in his heart the generosity to acknowledge that there is a small nation that stood alone not for one year or two, but for several hundred years against aggression; that endured spoliations, famines, massacres in endless succession; that was clubbed many times into insensibility, but that each time on returning [to] consciousness took up the fight anew; a small nation that could never be got to accept defeat and has never surrendered her soul?”
- Eamon De Valera, on Victory Day in Europe, May 8, 1945, responding in a radio speech to criticism by Winston Churchill of Ireland’s neutrality in World War II, a speech in which De Valera also thanked Churchill for not invading Ireland.
I'm a big fan of Michael Collins, the Irish Republican leader, but not of De Valera who was responsible for the Civil War in 1922 and putting Ireland back into the dark ages.
An Ireland lead under Collins would have successfully kept the country united with it's 32 Counties intact, also the country would have had better relations with Britain.
Old men in Ireland still remember Dev's beef sanctions that he imposed on England during WW2, unfortunately it hardly had any affect on Britain, but seriously impoverished the Irish farmer that previously raised 95% of it's livestock for the British market.
So needless to say, for many years now, his name has been mud in the Republic history.
Hope this doesn't upset you Murphy, but I got this revelation firsthand from several Irish farming families.
