Liberty Be
©2002 Roger W Hancock ( www.PoetPatriot.com )

As a rose its beauty adorns,
has its pricks, has it's thorns.
Life in Liberty, the freedom we see,
has its trials, be forewarned.

Through the air the bell rings free,
cover the bell and the ding sounds dim.
Regulation restricts sovereign unity,
as freedom strains from lawyers' whim.

Beauty abounds in the garden of flowers,
the gardener toils, for blooms all to view.
Liberty for some is oppression for others,
rights for all means, not all rights for you.

The Nation's bell once rang free,
the crack down side proclaims the cost.
Life in liberty, is not. freedom be,
rights came, by devoted lives lost.

One single bloom awaits more flowers,
to many, too close chokes the debut.
One lone liberty may stifle another;
balance of rights is responsibility to you.

Lucky
"From Reveille to Taps...The Culture of an Army Child and Family"
by Kimberly Anne Davis, age 14, 2 November 1997

I never live somewhere too long.
I never planted a tree and watched it grow.
I never know where I will be next week.
I never wore hi-fashion clothes.
I never became "part of the crowd."

There are other things I've never done.

I never was afraid to speak freely.
I never was scared to show my religion.
I never worried about unjust laws being made.
I never left flowers at a loved one's grave,
who died so I might be free.

I never forget how lucky I am.

Memorial - 2007
© 2007 Dean C. Broome, MD JD.

Here’s to those who paid the price
And stood atop the wall,
Who didn’t call it sacrifice,
But duty to a call.

Beyond our power to add, detract,
Or honor with parade,
Or praise with words all copper-plaqued,
In public squares displayed,

They held the line, they took the brunt
Directed at our flank.
From general to lowly grunt
Now “hero” is their rank.

For some – unknown – the laurel wreaths
Must rest on unnamed graves.
For others still, their God bequeaths
No slabs or architraves.

For other heroes, living hearts
Still speak aloud their name.
Their daughters, sons, and better-parts –
To memories lay claim.

Some met the foe with angry eye;
Some trembled at the fray;
Some grieved for wife and family;
Some paused to kneel and pray.

Yet, as their hour approached its mark
And minutes became rare,
All gazed into the dreaded dark,
And stood – where we weren’t – there.

We praise with words their bravery,
Their steadfast soldiers’ hands,
That shielded us from slavery
And wrack from foreign lands.

Now pause awhile, and think on them.
Let recollection stir
To memory, through this artless hymn,
Of those and who they were.

I agree and also add, posting anything with serious overtones on Offbeat is a shame.
