Denny I understand fanatics.
And the older male fits the profile completely.
The younger....not at all.

As for weapons....we have too many.
And we allow any wacko to own one. The way things
have been going the last 20 yrs that may have been
a really bad idea.

Au had the same problem w/mass shootings.
They enacted gun legislation in '97 and mass shootings
are a thing in the past there. And things like gun
violence and suicide by gun have dropped 60% or more.
That's not supposition but fact.

In this kid's case, add in an older brother that he loved and admired and there you go- a perfect storm of killing.

IF the following has been learned by you after you posted this, excuse the redundancy please.

And this can be found at credible news sources: The residence with the boat was OUTSIDE of the 20-block (or 20-street whatever it was) search zone. Fortunately it was not very far outside the zone.

In hindsight that decision on what would/would not be a search zone may be termed a "screw-up". That's not incompetence, just a decision that didn't work out in context of the area searched.

So fortunately, lifting the lock-down gave folk the opportunity to scope out their properties. That might have worked to the police advantage in that the kid was so weakened from loss of blood that carnage at that site didn't develop (though he tried), and the kid's alive -- and intelligence may be gleamed from interrogations.

Grace I get that.
I really do.(and I've heard the same speech
from my husband, parents, father in law, and
friends of the family...just since yesterday)
However what I do not believe is that
this Now 19 yr old boy was "cold and calculating"
for his first 8 yrs here. Kids at 11, 12, 14 are
not calculating. He was sociable. He had friends.
And somehow he was convinced to give up everything
good in him, everything good he would ever do, and
attack innocent, unarmed civilians.
I'd be really interested to know what does that.
I saw a new and interesting interview this morning with the bombers' uncle -- the one previously in front of the cameras yesterday that asked his nephew to give up and ask for forgiveness (adding that for clarity because 2 uncles were on camera yesterday). The one that called the older nephew a looser.

Today's interview elaborated that the older had radically changed in the last 3 or so years. Reading between the lines, his responses about the 19 year-old points to 'brainwashing' the younger by the older. I would surmise the closeness of the brothers is a factor in that turning of the younger in his formative years as you described.

Does anyone have any thoughts on
what they think will happen now w/this
suspect?

The news has been reporting since last
night that he has yet to be read his
Miranda rights. Will he now be considered
an enemy combatant?

Two-way street Crain. Other than obvious criminality, a reason the domestic forces of government must be armed is to counter the radical gun-wingnut anarchists and the radical and rabid Christian talibanatics -- the kind that kill American citizen Sikhs after 9/11 because they LOOKED like Muslims and not *US*.

He will be tried as a civilian, but the state can hold of on reading him his Miranda rights under the public safety exemption. At least that is what I am hearing from the local news.

Not sure he can be considered an enemy combatant since he became a U.S. about a year ago (according to news reports). I believe I read somewhere that there is some type of provision where, if it is deemed to be in the best interest of public safety, the accused can be denied Miranda rights.

I heard an explanation about a public safety exclusion in the Miranda requirement. It was used in the apprehension of the underwear bomber on that airplane.

The public safety exclusion pertains to questions about whether there are bombs placed and where, and if there are more subjects to apprehend that imperil the public --- that sort of thing. After those questions, he can still be legally Mirandized.

Could you provide some numbers to back that claim up? Compare the number of people killed in attacks by Christians worldwide last year, with the number of people killed in Islamic attacks, and let me know what you find. I'll be waiting

Early yesterday, Lindsay Graham,(famous Denny Crain impersonator) was calling for Obama to ignore the Constitution(!) and treat the bomber as an enemy combatant. The GOP'ers have odd interpretations of the Constitution to begin with but it's curious to hear one say it should be ignored. I didn't think they cared about it beyond the 2A anyway. Obama wants these things that happen on American soil handled through out very capable American courts. I agree. There IS an urgency here to learn if there are other bombs or other bombers set to attack so, I've got no problem with the very legal suspension of this scumbags Miranda rights.

Over 9000 people were killed in Islamic Terrorist attacks last year, which is actually an improvement over 2007s record of over 20,000 killed. http://www.islam-watch.org/authors/139-louis-... . Now it's your turn to show me a comparable amount of victims for Christian terrorist groups.
