Can't speak for M69 but, from my experience, there isn't anything painful there at all. At least not from a childhood sort of thing. I have always been pretty objective on things (hence our conversation about swinging or supporting the legalization of marijuana even though I don't smoke) and if you go through life unblinkered you soon realize that there simply can't be a faith that is more right than the other. There's no way to know. And then when you look at the history of religion, you soon realize that faith was simply a tool for power...
I wish I could continue this conversation but I have to start cooking for Thursday. Have a Happy Gobble day guys.. it's been interesting..

As soon as you walk in the doors of any church, you have done exactly as you describe. Religion is the root of all evil. Faith is one thing, pick your own thing to have faith in. But religions all want you to believe the way they interpret which ever book, deity, they follow. Then everybody fights over whose god is the right one to worship and which rules we should all be living by.

You both, EraserX and M69, seem to have had painful experiences with religion. I don't blame you for believing or feeling the way you do. I would to from the undertones... of what you haven't said.
Ok, I'm going to take this one step farther - what's the first thing they ask you for when you go to any church?

I'll give you a clue:$$$$$$$$$

It doesn't matter where, who or what type of church you go to.

What ever happened to the sacred vow of poverty?

But yet they all want their holy tax breaks.

No thanks - I'll just behave, respect my fellow man and never kick the dog - I'll see y'all up there.

A fool has said in his heart, there is no God. Are you a fool? Ask Jesus to save your soul from the burning hell NOW. We are all sinners.

See, I have issue with that, too. Isn't sort of warped to go around pointing out how unworthy we all are? "We're all sinners." And on whose system is that measured on? Perhaps the game has been rigged all along. Or, perhaps, we're all just a little bit too hard on ourselves.

At any rate, you'd truly have to be foolish to believe any of this pablum without using the brain what God gave you and THINK about it just a bit.

We share in that. My experiences over the years have shown how inadequate that faith really was - at least for me. The world is big and the universe is, truly, ineffable. It seems very unlikely to me that anyone on this sphere has it right.
But, hey, if your faith gives you strength and a sense of community then that's a good thing. Where folks so often go wrong is when they decide 'religious freedom' means a freedom to force their religion on others...

"We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people—one in twenty-five—has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in twenty-five everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath. They could be your colleague, your neighbor, even family. And they can do literally anything at all and feel absolutely no guilt."

If, through religion, hundreds of thousands of these people can be molded into/scared into (afraid of hell)/tricked into/guided into/enticed into (float around in Heaven- FOREVER!), being law-abiding citizens, it's got to be a good thing. Right?

You mean like Eric Robert Rudolf? Look, religion can't even keep pious folks from acting on their basest desires - again look at the problems Catholics are having - yes, sure, there are some that would be serious problems to society if their faith didn't hold them in check. There are also plenty who use that faith and twist it to act on their perversions.

Only Hebrews can do that - afterall, it was their story originally before the Christians got ahold of it and stepped on it more than a Karen Carpenter song.
