Pennies are pretty much unnecessary these days. Kinda like that nine tenths of a cent on gasoline prices.

I throw all mine out - it's not even worth the trouble of saving them - they only jam up the coin changes.

At the price of copper, they probably have more value melted down.

It doesn't seem right that a retailer can turn down what is still considered legal tender in the US. I'm not saying they shouldn't be eliminated, I read it costs more to produce them than they're worth. It just doesn't seem legal to me to be able to turn them down.

Last year it cost 2 1/2 cents to make a penny, I think it was 12 cents to make a nickel,,,,, no wonder this country is broke making business decisions like that.

As of 2012, it costs the U.S. Mint 2.41 cents to make a cent because of the cost of materials and production.

In mid-1982, the coin's composition was changed again, this time to copper-plated zinc.

Don't swallow a penny - zinc is poisionous.

$.02 a day X 7 days =$.14 a week

Cost for round trip plane tickets for the Doctor =$400

Look on Doctor's face when picking up weekly pennies = priceless

That would mean something if a penny was only used once, but a penny could be used, say, 10,000 times - meaning it's effective value is $100, so 2.14 cents yields 100$, not one cent

That's a rental, with open ended charges that need to be secured in advance.

I'm talking a straight forward retail sale. You could be right, but it doesn't seem legal to me.

I think you need to re-read my post a little more carefully - I said it costs 2.41 cents to make a penny. I could really care less how much you think it's worth or your theories - it has nothing to do with the conversation.

footnote: if a penny was used , but most sit in someones little bank ... doing nothing , thus money lost

If you don't think pennies are important, just write out your next federal tax check, your home mortgage or doctor visit check for one penny less then owed.
