I'm thinking Lost In Mississippi should get a GPS or ask the girl in the gas station where he is.

We used to love lightening bugs when I was a kid.
My family has just noticed, in the last few yrs, that
we don't see them anymore.
The entire area is heavily wooded and we should see
them every night......I wonder if pollution has something
to do w/them disappearing?
That is very interesting. How are the maple trees around you doing?

I've had a craving for a good Italian hoagie, except there is hardly any meat or cheese in them any more, so I stopped getting them. There are a couple of restaurants that still fill them nicely, so there is hope for the hoagie world yet !

All of the trees seem to be doing well.

The DNR (department of natural resources) are
always active in the area. Checking moth and
worm activity. Checking for anything that could
be a danger to the trees/plants/animals.

I've not heard a word about anything going on...
although if there were they would know.
I may ask one the next time I run into them.

We DO have an infestation of
"Japanese beetles." They look like
lady bugs. They are not native to
this area and have taken over in
recent yrs.

You have to wonder what kind of damage
that species that are not indigenous
actually do.

Is pouring so badly down here I have to keep the lights on to see. Is awful.

Yes, if you see one of the DNR folk ..ask them if they are spraying the area. Lightening bugs stay close to the ground. In the evening is fun to watch them drifting up from their hiding place.

Would seem to me, spray would drift and settle on the ground.

I looked up Japanese beetles. We've had an infestation of both, wooly aphids and stink bugs. The stink bugs live in my house in the winter. They seldom make spring. I vacuumed a dead one up on my carpeted stairs. Now I understand the name. Pungent wee beasts.

Found this about lightening bugs. Interesting: http://lightningbugrun.wordpress.com/lightnin...

Yes! lol

I have the stink bugs to. I find them
dead everywhere. They are not indigenous
to this area either.

The state and utility companies do spray
a lot here. To keep the plants/trees away
from the road and from getting into the
power lines. Could be a big part of the
problem.

Guess what I have...?
Sun.....it's out and shinning. Yay!:)
I feel grateful just to see it but it's
still as hot and humid as it was.
Forecast is still showing t-storms moving
through for the next 4 days.
Flash flood warnings for the entire area.
So it's not over yet.

Is still raining at a pretty good clip. Dark as dirt. 2 hours later.

My best guess is all the spraying is leaching into the ground. Not good.

Sun?~sighs~ Sounds so good.
It may not be over, but I sure am over it!

I finally got around to reading up on the Japanese beetles. Makes me wonder how they got from Japan to the eastern US.

I'm thinking I had a very nice weekend, but I do love coming home. I even love the downpour we're getting right now. Sounds cool on the tin roof :)
