If you want to discuss mercenaries, a la Pinkerton "Detective" Agencies in another thread, I may take a bite at your hook and bait.
Please keep in mind that I'm trying to keep focus on the initial premise of this thread.

liberals are trying to take Christianity out of Christmas, but should Christianity even be in Christmas to begin with?

NO! I thought we were already past that? That is the reason those private security people & in a very major way all those NATO ships are already doing this.
BUT do understand any outgoing commercial vessel has the right to guard their cargo, now it seems to be under going a transformation of rules of sea because in big print ,most nations on earth recognize what I was saying about pursuing attackers until the retrieve their goods back,by those rules ALL the countries that have been attacked can follow their attackers into whatever water or land it takes .
I do find it funny that IF someone was just over taking a vessel & setting fire to it or blowing it up ,we could call it an act of war & take the whole country lol. Not that we would we want it ,unless of course they had oil. Rick
We're getting somewhere here.

I have no problem with "NATO ships" patrolling the sea lanes to protect trading ships. It's one of the reasons I don't whine a lot about the size of the US Navy but I'd like to see other nations help out there.

Where our disagreement is whether commercial ship captains should be armed in the remote possibility pirates attack.

By doing so, it implies that they should also be combat trained to counterattack pirate raids in addition to piloting their ship safely across the oceans.

A firearm is not a magic talisman. Picking one up does not turn you into a homicidal maniac but it also doesn't grant you Rambo like powers to right injustice.

WE never had a disagreement:).
I have never said ANYTHING about that.
I HAVE shown many times now, where these lg. coprs. & shipping co's ARE in fact hiring separate security to go the distance with them. Now there are several well documented instances of private vessels, i.e Pleasure Yachts being hijacked in this area, the capt. or others then could have very well benefited from being armed or possibly having a private security person aboard.
IF you will look though those links I provided several from up to date GOV. resources show the exact countries involved in these nato exercises, they are at the highest level EVER for that region.
Many changes have happened, WE & the Russians for instance communicating at sea :). They ,we, have formed a check point, where ALL vessels coming & going through certain regions on the Horn check in with a central pt. then are rechecked ,coming & going.

Wait a sec here:

"leasure Yachts being hijacked in this area, the capt. or others then could have very well benefited from being armed or possibly having a private security person aboard."

I was never talking about leisure yachts. The premise of this thread was arming commercial cargo captains as indicated from the first post (container ships).

Piracy occurs in many locations, just not off Somalia as indicated here:

http://www.icc-ccs.org/piracy-reporting-centr...

Now take a look at the list of major trading partners with the US:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_larg...

The US Navy seems to be doing an adequate job of keeping the sea lanes in the US interests open.

Chop their wieners off and send them back to shore, the pirate dropout rate will eliminate the problem.

You still do & plenty has been added besides the normal fluff or filler, it is a simple problem really when taken in context to the amount of shipping .
What is different with this is ransom && kidnapping. RRick
