The destroyer USS Bainbridge came to the aid of the MV Liberty Sun and the Maersk Alabama, both attacked recently by pirates off the coast of Somalia.

If your the pirates, when something MUCH larger than a rpg or AK ,cuts your boat in 1/2.
They sure don't have much problem distinguishing most of the worlds navy's. Haze Grey & Underway! Rick
So are you suggesting that military ships should transport goods?

Why introduce guns into a commercial ship? How much combat tactical training should be required for trading vessel crews?

Or how about, leave as it is? When pirates strike cowardly on an unarmed vessel, bring the people in who specialize for these situations.

At the risk of a slippery slope argument, should every other commercial vehicle operator be equipped by hijacking? What's the cut off point?

Adding more guns doesn't seem to be a solution to the problem.

No . No misunderstanding,I was actually making a bit of humor for part of it. No, merging cargo & Naval vessels won't work anyway . part of the worlds navy's are already doing a lot of escort work in that region,if you do the homework on that & have been for many yrs.
At least one of those links shows what big co's really are doing & they hire private security firms to provide already highly trained men to literally make the cruise with them.
But your suggesting they wait until they are boarded until they do something is wrong in all ways. It becomes the same argument of when should I arm myself, especially in a high crime area, after I am robbed or kidnapped or NOW!

Have to Break some Eggs to make an omelet,

"Entering the life raft, they quickly and methodically re-engaged each pirate, making sure there was no more threat," Bissonnette recalled. "They found Phillips tied up in the corner unhurt."

In an interview, Phillips said he didn't see the SEALs firing inside the 25-foot lifeboat. But he said one of the pirates closest to him was "gasping" and in a "death rattle." The young pirate had two serious chest wounds, he said. He didn't see the other two pirates at the other end of the lifeboat.

Attorney Philip L. Weinstein, who represented the surviving pirate later prosecuted in federal court, said his legal team had an expert examine photographs the government provided of the dead Somalis. The expert estimated about 19 rounds had been fired into the bodies, Weinstein said.

The pirate problem ramped up as crews were disarmed. The ship companies paid off the pirates with million dollar ransoms, it encouraged more attacks. If the pirates were answered with bullets, rockets and grenades instead of treasure, there would not be this problem. And innocent people have lost their lives from these attacks. It would not take much time or $ to have some of the crew trained and armed well enough to repel an attack. Water hoses are not repelling them.

"But your suggesting they wait until they are boarded until they do something is wrong in all ways."

And here's where there's disagreement.

There are times where you let the crime happen and then catch them later when the adrenaline isn't flowing so high and cornering the animal where fight becomes the only solution for them.

The suggestion to arming commercial vessels is basically saying the same thing as arming bank tellers to prevent bank robberies.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm hesitant to introduce firearms requirements (and the time and training involved) into an area that should not need them.

I'd rather a cargo ship Captain be the master of everything about cargo ships in navigation, loading, severe weather, etc.

To expect the Captain of the ship to be a Master of Arms like a SWAT or Special Forces Commander may be asking to much for more than a few people.

Yes I assumed that is part of what your thinking is. Understand almost none of those vessels are doing this with their crew.
A swabee,a cook or even captain are not the people for this.
But what I don't think your seeing is just how many real private security co's operate that are ready to do it for them.
From the top of the line black ops type guys that we couldn't find REAL NO'S on if we tried,to every type out there.
Also compared with so many of the worlds probs. this is small potatoes, just in the U.S. look at the death rate on the U.S. Mexican border.
But those lg. co's operating private vessels in those waters are hiring security on their own nickel & there is now the largest multi nation naval presence there than EVER before. Rick
