I understand that the NBA is a privately owned company that has its own "constitution" which the players, coaches, and owners have agreed to operate under.
But would the NBA be allowed to use their status as a private company and their "constitution" to oust a owner based on his sexual preference or would the government step in to stop it?
What will the NBA do going forward when a player ( black or white ) is recorded making racist comments? Won't they be required to hand down the same punishment? What if the player is Lebron James? Are we to believe that Lebron or any other top NBA players have NEVER made a racist comment? Is Sterling's penalty really appropriate for what he said or is the NBA coming down so hard on him because they can do so without suffering any financial loss?
I don't disagree with the action taken against Sterling but the NBA could be setting a precedence here that they may have trouble living by in the future.
If they choose not to hand out a life-time ban to anyone caught making a racist statement going forward they will certainly open themselves up for a descrimination suite.
This is the way I see it...immediately sponsors for the Clippers backed away, they put black banners over the sponsors names in the stadium for Tuesdays game because they didn't want to be associated with the negative attention...you had players and fans sponsoring boycotts and rallies...the NBA ignores the problem and its going to grow beyond the Clippers. The NBA really had no other choice but to take the most extreme action to avoid the issue from snowballing out of control.

For sure. What you've listed are undeniable consequences, as I previously posted.

I agree that the NBA had to take some form of action. The players made certain of that by threatening to boycott. I do not agree that such an extreme action was required only three days after hearing what Sterling said.

I can only think of a couple instance where a professional sports organization handed down a lifetime ban... Pete Rose for gambling on baseball and maybe the players involved with fixing the World Series but I'm not sure about them. Both of those cases were more clear cut than Sterling's situation and I'm sure that neither decision came only three days after the story broke.

Sterling's comments were horrid but I would expect much worse from a true racist. Being from the South, I've had the misfortune of coming into contact with more than a few racists but none of them would use the word "minority" to describe a black person while having a private conversation.

Everytime someone starts yelling Freedom of Speech I have an exercise for them: Send an email to your boss tomorrow telling him/her what a self righteous douchenozzle you find him/her to be and when you get fired start screaming freedom of speech at the top of your lungs.
Somehow we are so disconnected from the First Amendment we believe freedom of speech comes with freedom from consequences and that just isn't the case...
Tally, as a former judge you should know better.
This was a private conversation that was taped without his knowledge..Illegal!!! You example of telling your boss off is a lame example..The bottom feeder girlfriend should be arrested..People like you is why the White race has become a target for Black to take advantage..

Sterlings attorney released a statement saying that he knew he was being recorded. What would you arrest her for? Being mixed race? Maybe if they were brother and sister you wouldnt have an issue with their arrangement? Your last statement was hi-frickin-larious too by the way....White Power!!! lol

is it?
im many states only one in the conversation has to be aware of it being recorded to make it legal

No apology needed. My reply was an acknowledgement that you stated the specifics to the general closing point I made that the right to freedom of speech doesn't absolve you of appropriate consequences.

Appreciate you being on top of the facts of this.

You don't see the contradiction there? Seems to me a whole lot of people get upset about what Rev. Wright, Farrakhan, J. Jackson, and Sharpton say ... including you.

Otherwise, so much venting about them wouldn't be read/heard.

You've got crumbled crackers in that box. Up to last night, nothing's out there that this gold digger is on the hook legally about this mess.

One consequence for the bottom feeder may be that she might be sued by Sterling's estranged wife. Said wife sued a former girlfriend to get some stuff back.

It's out there that this Sterling couple has been a team regarding those rental discrimination activities, with the wife being active in the process.

It will be interesting to see if Mrs. Sterling will try to buy the team, and what the NBA does or doesn't do if that occurs.

You'll have to clarify. I don't know what point you're making.

Unless, it has something to do with my point to Crain complaining that these notable blacks make statements about the white race and no one getting upset. So what's the "diff" there?

And I'll clarify...

my point to Crain was that a whole lot of folk [mostly white] get upset and offended about those notable blacks say, instead of "no one".
