The Associated Press

Veteran broadcaster David Frost, who won fame around the world for his interview with former President Richard Nixon, has died, his family told the BBC. He was 74.

Frost died of a heart attack on Saturday night aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was due to give a speech, the family said. The cruise company Cunard says its vessel had left the English port of Southampton on Saturday for a 10-day cruise in the Mediterranean.

Known for incisive interviews of leading public figures, Frost spent more than 50 years as a television star.

'Postscript'
By: Seamus Heaney.

***

"And some time make the time to drive out west

Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore,

In September or October, when the wind

And the light are working off each other

So that the ocean on one side is wild

With foam and glitter, and inland among stones

The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit

By the earthed lightening of flock of swans,

Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white,

Their fully-grown headstrong-looking heads

Tucked or cresting or busy underwater.

Useless to think you'll park or capture it

More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there,

A hurry through which known and strange things pass

As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways

And catch the heart off guard and blow it open "

Cal Worthington, a car dealer whose off-the-wall commercials, first broadcast in the 1950s, bombarded California television viewers for more than half a century and made him a pop culture legend, died on Sunday at his ranch in Orland, Calif. He was 92.

His family confirmed his death.

Mr. Worthington sold a lot of cars more than a million of them, by his count and at his peak in the 1960s ran an empire of 29 dealerships from San Diego to Anchorage. But it was the way he sold them that made him a byword for creative hard-sell salesmanship in the great American tradition.

Stuck with a dud location when he bought his first dealership, Mr. Worthington decided that the only way to attract customers was to hit the airwaves hard with radio and television commercials that stood out from the pack. This turned out to be his ticket to fame and fortune.

If you want a car or truck, go see Cal, if you want to save a buck, go see Cal.

I loved his commercials, growing up. My favorite Dog Spot was a tie between the skunk, the elephant/hippo combo and the (sassy) lion. The bear and tiger seemed to think he was a walking chew toy, heh.

No more standing on your head, Cal. Rest in Peace <3

[if original post finally displays, sorry about this 2nd try]

Source: Wikipedia

Kenneth Howard Norton Sr.(August 9, 1943 - September 18, 2013) was an American heavyweight boxer and WBC world Heavyweight Champion. He was best known for his 12-round victory over Muhammad Ali, when he famously broke Ali's jaw, on March 31, 1973, becoming only the second man to defeat a peak Ali as a professional (after Joe Frazier, who won a 15-round unanimous decision against Ali on March 8, 1971).
He and Ali would fight twice more in their trilogy, with Ali officially winning narrowly both return bouts, although many felt Norton truly deserved their third fight. Norton was awarded the WBC title (by virtue of his win over Jimmy Young in a 1977 title elimination bout) when Leon Spinks declined a mandated title defense against Norton, the number one contender. However, Norton lost it in his first defense on a split decision by 1 point to Larry Holmes in a great contest (Holmes-Norton is ranked as the 10th-greatest heavyweight fight of all time by Monte D. Cox, a member of the International Boxing Research Organization).

Source: yahoo sports blog

Norton was 42-7-1 with 33 knockouts and briefly held the WBC heavyweight title. He was awarded the WBC belt in 1978 when then champion Leon Spinks opted to face Ali in a rematch rather than defend it against Norton.

In his first defense, he lost the title to Larry Holmes in one of the greatest heavyweight title fights in history. The bout was even after 14 rounds and Holmes won a spectacular 15th on two of the three judges' cards to earn a split decision win and claim the belt.

[Really: that Holmes-Norton bout was a doozy, and a better round than #15 [after the previous 14] has rarely been seen -- it's incredible that both were still standing after it.]

Comedian Phyllis Diller, known for her self-deprecating humor, died "peacefully in her sleep" at her Los Angeles home Monday morning, her manager told CNN. Diller was 95. Her son, Perry, "found her with a smile on her face," manager Milt Suchin said. Diller's career as a stand-up comic, which she started at age 37, skyrocketed in the 1960s, partly because of her many appearances with Bob Hope on his television specials, USO tours and three movies.
