How do you plan for that rare disaster?

On Oct. 12, 1962, Vancouver Island, off the coast of British Columbia, was hit by winds the likes of which that area sees maybe once a century.

I believe that installing these sirens would be a benefit to the taxpayers of virginia. I grew up in the midwest and went through SEVERAL near misses from tornadoes as a child and believe that those sirens really did help. If The local towns can't afford the high costs of the sirens then maybe they should seek federal help to generate the initial money to buy and install them. Im sure the folks in suffolk would probably try to raise money for them too if asked since they are on the front lines of why this system would be a benefit the general public. There are many ways the money could be generated, the state and county goverments would just have to look into it.

Sunbury NC has a siren & it has made a big difference here. They are worth the money. I would not have known to turn the TV to our weather Channel the day the Tornado hit Suffolk if it hadnt been for our Siren going off.Its a life saver if you ask me.

Hello,
I am originally from missouri...tornado alley..We prepared by doing drills, assessing the best and safest to be in the evnt of a tornado no matter where you are, we had sirens much like the ship yards , which really freaked me out when I first moved here because they sound just like tornado sirens.. know what a cloud that could possibly house a tornado looks like, They are very distinct from your normal storm cloud. The area could use some basements..that would be an advantage..sure they can flood in a hurricane, but they can save you in a tornado or a micro-burst..those can be just as nasty as a tornado..

Put VDOT incharge of the sirens, that way we will know 30 min. after anything happens. (this is based on the way they handle the message boards) Sirens are a WASTE of money (in this area)

Amazing how you ignorant whites post your racist comments to a forum that has nothing to do with race.

The historical East End community of Newport News is prone to flooding. Not to mention all the older trees and houses could fall during a bad storm.

City leaders need to have a plan in place to help the community before the next big storm hits the area.

You know HG, I have just heard enough of your race card ploys to get a riot started.

There are other types of people who talk that way.
Chunk your crystal ball and get with the program.

You are the race card player on the post(s).
Stop looking for sympathy from the devil.

So the comments that I quoted weren't racist? But my comments are?

You are nothing but a typical white who has his head burried in the sand. You keep yourself in denial and do nothing but stick up for your fellow racists.

East Coast very seldom ever had a tornado from decades back.
Now, one has to be prepared 24-7
As for sirens, YES. Not all are sitting around a TV or stereo all day.
I get my alerts on my cell.

You just sit back chillin and wait till it happens. If you survive then you demand the governor, president and FEMA give you free money and other stuff.

Just save some minutes on their cell phone bill and go buy a NOAA Weather Alert Emergency Radio. That's all that's needed to be informed of severe weather.

Being informed of a pending storm isn't the problem Bubba. The problem is the aftermath of the storm or disaster. The poorer people, disabled, and eldery members of our community lack the resources to survive. We need to have a solid plan in place to deal with that situation.

You mean a plan that workers not only have their own disasters to deal with they are expected to finance the ones who refuse to even try to be responsible for their own lives? Like the folks in New Orleans who knew that a cat 5 hurricane was going to hit them living below sea level and just sat there and waited for it to happen. Then they "demanded" the government provide for them. Their high profile black mayor was completely ineffective in providing for the pubic safety of his citizens before the storm hit. Very noticible were the people not in NO who cleaned up the mess and went on with their lives.

I had a question but no one seemed to have an answer for me. We love in So. California and to my knowledge we have never had a Tornado, not at least until last week. It was a wake up for a lot of us because we do not have basements and so where is the best place to get in the event of a Tornado?? Please don't say to try and get out of town, you have never been to Orange County if you say that, we are just a few miles from Disneyland. The traffic is so bad you would not believe it. We could walk out before driving out it would be faster. Someone said to get into the bath tub and stay down and cover your head with pilows. That may be correct but I hear that a Tornado can pick up a truck and toss it so what goods is a bath tub???? Anyone got an answer ? the Sirens sounds great but you need to know where to go if you hear the siren.

Thanks

First thing to do is to think about it ahead of time. Last minute plans will have holes in them. Things to think of - where to go -(hide from the wind and run from the water) what to take with you, Flashlight and extra batteries, cellphone and charger for house and car, keep you car filled wit gas, water, food, medicine, important papers and pictures, clothes - you make a list that you can use and review it once in a while. Me, I like the idea of a nice firearm and some extra ammo too. Weather radio and extra batteries.
Someone mentioned basements - fine in areas that can have them, other areas just too wet. Goooogle Tornado Room / Storm Room or Safe Room or something like that. You can make an existing room in your house safe from tornados if you can't have a basement. If not that then think about where to take shelter (small inclosed room, bathtub) or maybe a different building altogether for those in mobile homes (if you can). Have all of your family in the area know to call one or two family members outside of the area in case you are seperated - at least you'll have an idea if people are ok and where to find them.

HG: I think you should head up an airlift project for the above mentioned. All else should be in place, along with COMMON sense.

Maybe you could get a gang of like men to go and start picking up trash now. Around the yards, pig pens.....etc....you did forget the pets. Who is going to save the pets??????????
