Don't know why they looked at 1400 years, the temperature rate of increase in the first half of the 20th century was the same as the rate of increase in the second half of the 20th century.

The time period of the 20th century the most recent increase is compared to is the 1951 to 1980 time period. The above chart shows 1951 to 1980 is a time of cooling.
