Or people could buy a classic reel mower for even less money and only use human power for fuel. I'm just saying.

Melissa,
That is exactly what I do. I moved from an apartment to my first house and there was a fairly new gas mower here. I never use it. I have two reel mowers and use them only. My lawn looks better than my neighbors because the reel mower does not shred the blades of grass. I get a good workout, the grass clippings are a natural fertilizer, it is quite, and I am doing no harm to the environment.

I once used a Toro-brand electric mower (powered by a deep-cycle marine lead-acid battery). The first couple of weeks I could cut both the front and back yards -- thereafter, I was limited to cutting the one yard on Saturday, the other on Sunday, because the battery would no longer hold a full charge. After several years, and several batteries, I junked the mower.

Another drawback was that it would cut only a 16-inch swatch, as opposed to the 18- or 24-inch swath cut by a typical four-cycle gasoline mower.(N.B. to the reporter: Relatively few two-cycle mowers were ever sold; most have four-cycle engines.)

My suggestion: If you have to use an electric mower to assuage your conscience, use a corded mower.

Use electric mowers and human powered mowers for small areas. Gas mowers are for bigger areas.

What most people don't realize is that most electricity has a smokestack in it's production.

This story is nothing but another liberal/socialist propaganda piece from THE SUN.

I used to live in Denver and fortunately, most properties are on the smaller size.

It may have a smokestack, but the emissions generated (even from a coal burning plant) is less dangerous for the amount of electricity generated than the equivalent amount of energy created by burning gasoline in a lawn mower.
Also, although mowers and other small-engine power equipment contribute far fewer emissions overall than cars and trucks, the average walk-behind mower pollutes 11 times as much per hour.

Try them with a large lawn or lawn that may have grown fast due to rain, and you can forget it. They are terrible and I don't care what you pay for them.

Thanks for your opinion, Mr. Cheney. Time for you to begin to clean out the vice president's residence, since we're going to have to give it a good fumigating before the next guy lives there...

They will still blame Bush. I can hear them now, "It is going to take years and years to fix what Bush did."

I would do this if it was to actually work. An electric mower in no way could cut my yard. Gas mowers all the way.. the amount of emission is so small its irrelevant.

yeah.. you are right.. you point out a good issue. The fact that we still burn cole for energy/electricity, I beleive over 80% is still by burning coal. You think that would be a bigger issue than the lawn mower, that barely emitts anything.. Liberals have been using this fear tactic for a long time now, and they still call Rep's fearmongers..lol makes you laugh but oh well.. How about all the wild fires that would still be if were were not a modern day civilization.. doesnt that counterballance some of the emission issues.. guess it doesnt matter, because it doesnt support there theories...

Believe it or not, we use a modern designed Scott's push mower. We have a moderately small lawn and back yard (not tiny) and the benefits are huge: good exercise although not particularly difficult; no polluting fossil fuels either from the mower or the power plant; deep respect for the neighborhood by losing the incredible noise. Try it you'll like it.

"The reason? Two-cycle lawn mower engines burn a combination of oil and gas which is less efficient and more polluting......."

Another great job by a hard hitting investigative reporter. Lawn mowers with two-cycle engines are just about non-existent.

to use elctric to charge it is not feasable on Long Island while LIPA is all we have for power. Cheaper electric and other company sources for power would make more battery powered appliances and tools attractive.
