Why are the homeless mostly veterans and those with families down on their luck? Why do you not see any Hispanics or illegal aliens in these shelters?

It's because the folks from the south are a happy people compared to the U.S. Their families are more nuclear and supportive than the dispersed families in the U.S....many help each other to come here and provide support (and they're not trapped here, they can always go back home).
In the U.S. it more "every person for themselves", and "dog eat dog." And as the suicide rate for serving and ex-service men tops battle casualties is presently in the news it should be easy to deduce they are used/abused then mostly thrown on the street to make these wounded warriors fend for themselves.
It makes me ashamed.

The Hispanics and illegal aliens you speak of didn't register with their local draft boards and escaped the Vietnam War which could account for them not having the same life experiences as the veterans which fill the shelters.
