No electricity here for 8 hours a day! And no internet in homes for 10 hours, as it takes 2 hours or more for the internet company to get service to your location!

Correa, instead of getting a lone for $235 Million for a hydro plant. You should have gone to NORWAY! Beer is the NATIONAL DRINK here. Guess what people do when they drink??? NORWAY has the technology to turn human waste into ELECTRICAL POWER!!!!!!!

The blackouts continue, and will do so for the next two months.
In Quito various sectors are blacked out for 4 hours at a time. These blackouts are scheduled, and prior warning can be obtained from the electric utility's website.
That being said, the BBC was obviously lied to, in typical Latin fashion, and believed it, in typical British fashion.
The power disruptions are very clearly diminishing the quality of life for all in Ecuador. Businesses which do not have generators are closing, traffic is strangled.
Visitors should be aware of increased food poisoning risks as no business ever throws spoiled food away, and in many cases doesn't even know that spoiled food is bad for people.

BETTER start reading the story of what the US does in taking other countries natural resources. And also start thinking seriously about the Chemtrails. Do you think this is just a coincidence that now that the bases are out, now there is no electricity? Ask other countries about the relationship between lack of electricity and animosity toward the US government. Open you eyes. People are not jelous of the US. The poor people who go to the US are due to the same results of the same policies hidden from the American people about what they do to other countries. Wake up!

American tourists/retirement candidates are seeking safety and a refuge from the rising cost of living in the U.S in small towns like Cotacachi and Vilcabama. We welcome comments from locals in these areas and suggestions on how to find the truth about current conditions.

Norselady,
If you're seeking "safety" then Ecuador is the wrong place for you. Crime is up 400pct. with the new populist govt. It is no longer a crime to steal items less than $400 in value. Immigrants are coming from Cuba, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, etc. for the sole purpose of committing crimes and gaining dollars.
Among the traditional "locals" in Vilcabamba there exists a rising anti-gringo speculator sentiment as costs of land and services are rising due to the retiree's overpaying for everything.
Cotacachi and Otavalo are seeing a rise in crime as well as the gringo settlements are first surveilled, then raided. The police have little sympathy when the rich are robbed/assaulted.

Also, if you believe "Truth", you'd better watch out for those chemtrails and the drought!

Otherwise, if you can put up with the crime, martial law, and the fact that modern hospital facilities are over 3-12 hours away, depending on where you live, you'll do fine to retire here.

Don't know what you've been eating or smoking, but the issue here is LACK OF RAIN! For the past 30 years this has been an on going issue. Correa had $700 Million dollars when he was elected for electricity improvements, but no one knows where the money is now.

Ecuador used to buy electricity from Colombia, but since Ecuador has essentially stopped diplomatic ties with Colombia, they can not buy electricity.

If you think that ever issue is caused my the US, then you better explore what the Bush administrations involvement in 9/11! Learn the facts!

All I know is that Ecuador is going thru a bad wrap. Poor people. The crimen is horrible, the laws corrupted and now they have no electricity.

All the stupid desicions by the goverment inflicts nothing but pain on the people.

They got rid of the Americans from Manta, a very bad move from Correa. They broke diplomatic relations with Colombia. Another stupid move. Thanks to Chavez who hates Americans.

I am sure the tourists are going to find a better place to spend holidays because of the high crimen and the rationed electricity.

Poor people from Ecuador. I don't know what is the solution. But I know Correa is not good for them. Neither are the weak and corrupted laws that protect the criminals.

I'm heading to Quito in the next month, should be nice to spend the holidays in the dark! I guess it's a way to slow life down--get away from the busy American life. Lol. Ecuador as a whole is getting a bad wrap (well said Rachel). Correa is Chavez's puppet hence the cut ties with Americans in Manta and with America-friendly Colombia. We all know the Ecuadorian government is corrupt, as are the police and any public officials. Crime as gone up, yes. But the real problem is the new laws allowing crime to go up. All in all, I hope this is just a phase and Ecuador will rise up again--making it the country is was on path to be. For now, be more cautious, don't make yourself look rich and you won't have too much to worry about! I know I'm certainly not going to cancel my trip of a few hours of electricity! Hell, it will probably force me to explore the TRUE ECUADOR even more!
