Coal mining is still the major voting issue in W.Va. But it is a declining industry that kills often ( tinyurl.com/43jzt73 ) and in the past has had labor strife, environmental disasters (i.e mountain top removal) and too much sulfur (which could be fixed by using IGCC to improve efficiency while separating out the SOx.) In fact, IGCC combustion is much more efficient with the higher energy W.Va coal so it makes a LOT of sense to use it for SOx reduction as well as power. tinyurl.com/pj9du2m

Of course, there is also the pollution of mining wastes, and pumping slurries down bore holes has been a BIG problem with ground water pollution. They need a much better plan to deal with the waste.

But the coal mining and energy industry is 'rust belt America'. It defies progress and is trying not to change. It will fail. Even the politics of W.Va is changing as people get tired of the smell, dust, sickness, etc.

Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains

Maybe they go back to tobacco. <sarcasm>

Maybe they don't want healthcare. <more sarcasm>
