I do not agree with the writer's opinion that the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad should be abandoned and turned into a trail.
The railroad provides the least costly transportation for timber mills and for the dairy economy in an extensive, difficult to access region in Tillamook.
We need to respect infrastructure in our Pacific Northwest society. Business provides jobs. Jobs are the essential element of society. Work provides schools, government and recreation.
You cannot tax a trail. You have to protect the people on it from damage to the footpath, you have to provide police to prevent crime.
Keep the railroad. Repair it. Put it back quickly and engineer the areas where it needs careful work. The fish have been fine while the railroad was in existance. A railroad near a stream does not need road salt for de-icing. The use is compatible.
Fix the railroad and get it back in business. Charge the shippers more for anticipated larger storms and keep going.

Although too expensive to repair the R.R., the last thing we need is to make a trail out of the right of way and then announce it to the rest of Portland. At the moment this is accessible, but to only those that are willing to spend the time and energy to do so. Making a trail would be expensive due to the necessary trail/bridge/tunnel repairs not to mention the lawsuits when idiots do stupid things to themselves. There would also be the increase of people visiting the area, more vehicle traffic to the area and the hard to maintain logging roads. Keep it as it was/is, "Enter at your own risk".
There used to be sign-in sheets along this route for hikers/hunters/fishermen that released the the railroad from legal issues. I can see it now, it would be like the Banks-Vernonia trail with paved paths, no hunting-camping-fishing-having fun signs everywhere with a bunch of REI clothed wanna be hippies thinking they are really roughing it.
No thank you, I vote leave it alone.

Id like in the the railline that my father worked on restored to full operation and coal trains be running to tillamook,also id live in tillamook county and use the railline to go to portland and not be in a hurry for anythhat would be needed oing.i don't need to be on facebook and sit on my lazy ass all the time.id ask my father since he was a gandy dancer how to put it back in decent shape,would like a reply:-D

No owner of the PRN has ever turned a profit because the Salmoberry is prone to flooding and landslides. Port of Tillamook Bay already got burned on it once and they won't invest in it again as a railroad. But if all of you railroad proponents think you can turn a profit from it maybe you should get together and buy the right of way.
On the other hand, right of way which serves no economic or practical purpose at the moment (besides the scenic railway) can be turned into a rail/trail that will allow residents and visitors to get around the area without out car, something that is practically impossible on many sections (esp HWY 101) because of the dangerous road conditions.
Until rail technology improves in such a way to make it viable in the Salmonberry River Canyon, I can't think of a better use for the right of way.
