Ferry Closed as Mississippi River Rises

With the Mississippi River cresting beyond the National Weather Service’s previous predictions and even higher than the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers anticipated, precautions are now in motion to prevent potentially catastrophic flooding along the river’s lower portions.

From Thursday’s closure of ferry operations near St. Francisville to today’s rare opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway to the south near Norco, both public and private interests began preparations.

The weather service issued its revised flood-crest forecast Thursday for portions of the lower Mississippi River because of recent heavy rains in the Arkansas, Ohio and Upper Mississippi River Valley. The new forecast raises the crest level at Baton Rouge and Red River Landing — across the river from Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola — by 1 foot and delays the crests five days beyond earlier predictions.

The river is now expected to crest April 21 at 42 feet in Baton Rouge and at 59.5 feet at the Red River Landing.

Have you seen the water over the road leading to the ferry? How, pray tell, are the cars supposed to get to/from the ferry with water over the road? "They" would be the great waters of the Mississippi River?

You, obviously, do not use the ferry on a regular basis. I was not talking about the present situation re. the water on the road, but the past year or so when "they" would close-down the ferry for the slightest of reasons.

Ok, Carmen. How many times was the ferry closed, for what durations, and compare that to previous years. I'd be happy to consider your findings.

Ah, there you go. Attack the debater rather than present an argument.

Typically in a debate, the person presenting the alternative viewpoint will present facts, statistics, etc., to backup his/her point. Since I'm not the one raising the point (you are), it seemed logical that you would have that data at your fingertips to support your argument. Ferry out of service through next week

The Mississippi River ferry between West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee parishes will be out of service through next week, the state Department of Transportation and Development said in a news release Friday.

The ferryboat St. Francisville recently returned from a shipyard to replace the other boat, the New Roads, which has a blown engine, the news release says.

However, DOTD decided Friday the St. Francisville must return to the shipyard for more repairs.

DOTD said the U.S. Coast Guard is concerned with bushings of the St. Francisville’s new rudder and will not clear the vessel for service until the bushings are repaired.

Maintenance crews had planned to work through the weekend to repair the rudder, in an attempt to return the ferry to service Monday afternoon.

Further inspections, however, showed more extensive damage to the rudder than first thought, requiring the ferry to return to the shipyard.
