New England struck by same fungus that caused Irish Potato Fami...

Connecticut and most of New England are at risk of losing tomato crops to late blight - the fungus that decimated the potato harvest in Ireland in the mid-19th century - due to the wet weather throughout the region over the last several weeks.

I guess we'll just have to import some tomatoes or *gasp* buy canned ones for a while.

Comparing this to the famine of the 1840's in Ireland (when about 1 million died) is a bit ridiculous and fatalistic, don't you think?

Well my garden this year is over abundant and we have been picking tomatoes for about two weeks. Last year we had blossom rot but asked someone and they said you have to mulch a lot here because of the heat..And this year fantastic. I hope you all get some beauties as you can't beat a fresh tomato off the vine,,Do not ever put the fresh ones in the fridge it takes some of the taste away.Great growing season this year for everything cukes, zucchini,beans corn and the melons are huge. The corn and peach farmers are selling the sweetest peaches..Last year the peach trees had a bad frost .I guess everyone has good and bad years but I hope for the public's sake the prices do not go sky high.
